. >> I WANT TO SEE IT. TO SEE IT ON U.S. SOIL. >> A CLOSER LOOK TONIGHT AT WHAT LIFE IS LIKE FOR WOMEN IN AFGHANISTAN NINE MONTHS AFTER THE U.S. WITHDREW. RIGHTS WILL NOT BE TAKEN AWAY. >> DECODING TEEN TEXTS. WARNING PARENTS WHAT SOME OF THE IMAGES THAT TEENAGERS YOU STAND FOR. ONCE THAT COULD INCLUDE SEARCHING FOR AND BUYING DRUGS. >> -- >> AND IN THIS WEEKS TIKTOK, NEARLY 60 MILLION FOLLOWERS -- FIGHTING HOMELESSNESS, TINY HOMES TO HELP HUNDREDS NEEDS. GOOD EVENING EVERYONE, I'M LINDSAY DAVIS THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR STREAMING WITH. US MOUNTING QUESTIONS TONIGHT ABOUT THE TIMELINE IN THE MASS SHOOTING OF ROBB ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN TEXAS. AND AFTERNOON BRIEFING IS ONLY FUELING CONFUSION WITH VERY LITTLE EXPLANATION AS TO WHY ROUGHLY AN ENTIRE HOUR PASSED BETWEEN FIRST-TIME OFFICERS EXCHANGED WITH THE 18 OF GOVERNMENT AND THE MOMENT THE AGENTS FATALLY SHOT HIM. NEW VIDEO FROM THE PARKING LOT OUTSIDE SHOWS PARENTS PLEADING WITH OFFICERS TO ENTER THE BUILDING TO DO SOMETHING. KNOW, 18 CHILDREN AND TWO TEACHERS WERE KILLED. A THE HUSBAND OF ONE OF THOSE TEACHERS KILLED SUFFERED A FATAL HEART ATTACK TODAY JUST 48 HOURS AFTER LOSING HIS WIFE. TONIGHT WE WILL HEAR MORE FROM THE PARENTS OF THOSE STUDENTS KILLED AS AUTHORITIES GO THROUGH SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE FOR ANSWERS. PRESIDENT BIDEN WILL VISIT EOVALDI THIS WEEKEND, IT REMAINS UNCLEAR IF THERE'S ANY POLITICAL WILL FOR CHANGE. WE HAVE COMPLETE COVERAGE TONIGHT. WE ALSO LEAD OFF FROM EOVALDI. >> POLICE FACING QUESTIONS. COULD THAT DEADLY RAMPAGE AT ROBB ELEMENTARY BEEN STOPPED SOONER? >> [INAUDIBLE] >> INVESTIGATORS SAY JUST MINUTES AFTER SHOOTING HIS GRANDMOTHER, SALVATORE RAMOS CRASHED HIS MOTHER'S TRUCK AT AM. THEY SAY HE WAS OUTSIDE A FUNERAL HOME. THE FIRST 9-1-1 CALL CAME IN AT HE WALKED OUT THE SCHOOL FIRING AT IT, CLIMBED OVER A FENCE AND ENTERED THE BUILDING. AT THIS POINT THE SHOOTER WAS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS. TODAY AUTHORITIES MAKING IT CLEAR THAT HE WAS NEVER IN ANY DIRECT CONNECTION WITH A POLICE OFFICER. INVESTIGATORS STUDIED THESE IMAGES THAT APPEARED TO SHOW RAMOS ENTERING AND UNLOCKED DOOR. HE HEADS DOWN A HALLWAY INTO ONE CLASSROOM NEXT TO ANOTHER. >> [INAUDIBLE] >> AT HE IS INSIDE THE SCHOOL FOR FOUR MINUTES. THEN THE OFFICERS ON THE SCENE, THEY NOW LEARN -- >> THEY DON'T MAKE ENTRY INITIALLY BECAUSE OF THE GUNFIRE. WE HAVE OFFICERS CALLING FOR ADDITIONAL RESOURCES. WE NEED BODY ARMOR, WE NEED PRECISION RIFLEMEN, NEGOTIATORS. >> EVENTUALLY A BORDER CONTROL TACTICAL TEAM ARRIVES. >> I BROUGHT SOME AN HOUR LATER. U.S. BORDER PATROL, TACTICAL TEAMS ARRIVE, THEY MAKE ENTRY. SHOOT AND KILL THE SUSPECT. >> DURING THAT TIME, POLICE WAITED TO GO INTO THE CLASSROOM. THESE IMAGES OF DESPERATE PARENTS AS THEY PLEAD TO TRY TO REACH THEIR CHILDREN. >> I'LL GO IN WITHOUT A GUN. >> OFFICERS WERE TRYING, WE WERE TRYING TO EVACUATE SOME OF THE CHILDREN. >> WHEN IT WAS OVER 19 CHILDREN AND TWO TEACHERS WERE DEAD. SO MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TIME THAT WENT BY, WE HAVE HEARD JUST WEEKS AGO OFFICERS PRACTICED FOR THIS. YOU'VE ALL THE POLICE DOING A DRILL AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. HIS DAUGHTER JACQUELINE, A FOURTH GRADER, WAS INSIDE AND WAS SHOT. SHE WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL AND LATER DIED. TONIGHT, MANY ASKING COULD THE CHILDREN HAVE BEEN SAVED? >> AS SOON AS WE RUSHED IN, WE CAN SEE. THAT >> TONIGHT, THE CHILDREN WHO DID SURVIVE NOW LIVING WITH HORROR, IT IS PLAYING OUT IN THEIR HEAD. WHEN DID YOU NOTICE THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG? >> WELL WHEN THE BULLET CAME THROUGH A WALL, I TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS AND EVERYONE WENT UNDER THE TABLE. >> HAD YOU PRACTICED LOCKDOWN DRILLS? >> YES SINCE KINDERGARTEN. >> SUCH A HEINOUS SCENE DESPITE ALL THOSE DRILLS. MATT GOTTMAN JOINS NOW, TODAY WE LEARNED THAT THE GUNMAN WAS INSIDE THE SCHOOL FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR BEFORE HE WAS KILLED. HAS LOST ENFORCEMENT EXPLAINED WHY TOOK SO LONG? >> THEY CERTAINLY HAVE BEEN TRYING TO EXPLAIN THAT, LINDSEY. ONE OF THE THINGS THEY SAID WAS THAT DEPUTIES DID RESPOND TO THE SCENE, AT LEAST TWO OF THEM THAT WE KNOW WERE SHOT. THEY DIDN'T FLEE, THEY WERE IN THE SCHOOL BUT THEY ARE SAYING THAT THE GUNMAN WAS INSIDE THAT CLASSROOM AND THEY COULD NOT SEE HIM. THEY DIDN'T WANT TO FIRE INTO THE WALLS OR THROUGH THE DOOR UNLESS THAT. THEY WERE AFRAID OF CLAD WILL DAMAGE. THE GUNMAN WAS FIRING THROUGH THE WALLS AND THE DOOR AT THEM TO TRY TO KEEP THEM BACK. THEY DECIDED THEY NEEDED TO WAIT FOR PROFESSIONAL TACTICAL TEAMS TO COME. THAT'S WHEN THE TEAM FROM THE BORDER PATROL CAME. FINALLY THEY NEUTRALIZE THE GUNMAN, OF COURSE THAT WAS ALL OVER AN HOUR AFTER IT STARTED. I'M TOLD THAT IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT MOST OF THE CHILDREN DIED LONG BEFORE THE END OF THAT HOUR, LINDSEY. >> THAT IS LITTLE CONSOLATION FOR THE PARENTS, INTERESTING TO NOW UNDERSTAND THE TIMELINE. MATT, WE KNOW YOU SPOKE TO THE 18-YEAR-OLD SHOOTERS MOTHER, WHAT DID SHE HAVE TO SAY? >> I SPOKE TO HER LAST NIGHT LINDSEY AND THE FIRST THING SHE SAID WHEN I MET HER WAS THOSE POOR KIDS, THOSE POOR PARENTS. YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO SEE PEOPLE BEHIND ME AT THAT GROWING MEMORIAL. SHE DID FEEL TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF SORROW FOR WHAT HAPPENED, SHE ALSO LOST HER SON BUT SHE SAID THAT SHE HAD AN UNEASY FEELINGS ABOUT HIM SOMETIMES. HE COULD BE AGGRESSIVE AND ANGRY. SHE ALSO SAID THAT HE IS NOT A MONSTER BUT HARD TO CONVINCE THE PEOPLE IN THIS TOWN OF THAT AT THIS POINT. >> MAC GOTTMAN, OUR THANKS TO YOU AS ALWAYS. LET'S BRING IN OUR ABC NEWS JUSTICE CORRESPONDENT PIERRE. SOME REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE DETAILS ABOUT THE RESPONSE. I WANT YOU TO TAKE US BACK TO COLUMBINE BECAUSE WEREN'T NEW TRAININGS ESTABLISHED TO ENSURE THIS RESPONSE DIDN'T HAPPEN? >> WE WANTED TO BE MEASURED HERE BECAUSE DETAILS ARE STILL COMING IN ABOUT WHAT TOOK PLACE. BEING A POLICE OFFICER IN THE SITUATION IS CHALLENGING AND DAVIS -- FOLLOWING COLUMBINE, WHEN OFFICERS WERE CRITICIZED FOR WAITING TOO LONG POLICE HAD BEEN TRAINED TO ENGAGE THE ACTIVE SHOOTER AT ALL COSTS TO SAVE LIVE'S. WHOEVER IS ON SCENE, PERIOD. I PERSONALLY PARTICIPATED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING. IT IS AN INCREDIBLY LONG. TIME >> WE ALSO LEARNED TODAY THAT THERE WAS NO SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER AND THE SCHOOL WAS NEVER PLACED UNDER LOCKDOWN. >> THE EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THE SCHOOL WAS NOT ON LOCKDOWN AND WE LEARNED THAT THERE WAS NO SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER PRESENT WHEN THE GUNMAN HIT THE SCHOOL. HERE IS WHY THAT IS IMPORTANT. IN THEORY, AN OFFICER ON DUTY AT THE SCHOOL WOULD HEAR POTENTIALLY THROUGH RADIO THAT THERE IS A SHOOTING NEARBY THE SCHOOL AND WOULD HELP ALERT SCHOOL OFFICIALS WHO COULD THEN INITIATE A LOCKDOWN. ONE OF THE SADDEST THINGS I HEARD TODAY WAS THAT THE GUNMAN WALKED INTO THAT CLASSROOM, THE DOORS WERE WIDE OPEN. >> PIERRE THOMAS, OUR THANKS TO YOU. >> HEARTBROKEN PARENTS GRAPPLING WITH THE LOSS ALL WHILE DEMANDING ANSWERS FROM POLICE. ABC'S NEERA HAS BEEN SPEAKING TO FAMILIES. I KNOW YOU HAD CHANCES TO SPEAK WITH THE FAMILY OF TESTS, HOW ARE THEY PROCESSING ALL OF THIS? >> LINDSEY, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE THERE REALLY WASN'T A DRY EYE IN THE ROOM, A VERY EMOTIONAL AND POWERFUL ACCOUNT NOT JUST FROM HER PARENTS BUT FROM HER SISTER AS WELL. THEY WERE ADAMANT IN WANTING TO SPEAK OUT, THEY WANTED TO TELL THE STORY AND NOT LET ANYONE ELSE TELL HER STORY. THEY WANTED TO HONOR HER MEMORY SO THAT THE THINGS SHE -- SHE WAS KIND, SHE WAS BUBBLY, SHE FILLED THE ROOM WITH LAUGHTER ALL THE TIME AND SHE WANTED TO BE A TIKTOK STAR. SHE WOULD TAKE HER PARENTS PHONE AT ANY GIVEN TIME AND SHE WOULD FILM VIDEOS OF HERSELF DOING DIFFERENT DANCES. WHEN I ASKED WHERE I COULD FIND THESE VIDEOS HER MOTHER ACTUALLY TOLD ME THAT SHE NEVER ALLOWED TEST TO POST THEM BUT SHE HAS DOZENS OF THEM IN HER OWN TIKTOK PROFILE. SHE GOES BACK AND SHE IS BEEN WATCHING THEM OVER THE LAST FEW DAYS. THESE PARENTS ARE OBVIOUSLY GRIEF STRICKEN, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THEY ARE VERY FRUSTRATED. THEY HAVEN'T GOTTEN A LOT OF INFORMATION ON THIS INVESTIGATION AND REALLY THEY ARE BEGGING TO HOLD THE DAUGHTER ONE MORE TIME. I ASK THEM A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE FEELING IN THIS MOMENT AND HOW THE COMMUNITY HAS SURROUNDED THEM IN THIS MOMENT OF SHOCK AND DEVASTATION, TAKE A LISTEN TO WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY. >> HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU SAY THAT? EVERY TIME WE TURN ON THE NEWS AND HEARD OF ANOTHER SHOOTING, IT CAN HAPPEN. IT CAN HAPPEN HERE. IT HAPPENED HERE. THEY TOOK BABIES AWAY FROM THEIR FAMILIES. >> YOU KNOW LINDSEY, AS A PARENT IT WAS REALLY HARD TO SIT IN FRONT OF THIS MOTHER AND ASK ARE THESE QUESTIONS BUT I HAVE TO SAY, THEY WERE VERY STRONG BOTH HER, HER DAUGHTER, AND HER HUSBAND JERRY. IT WAS REALLY AN HONOR TO GET TO KNOW TESTS THROUGH THEM TODAY. >> JUST SPEECHLESS WATCHING THAT VIDEO. OUR THANKS TO YOU. YOU'VE ALL THE LEADER NEWS, THE TOWN'S PAPER WITH A POWERFUL MESSAGE USING NO WORDS ON THEIR FRONT PAGE, CLOAKED IN BLACK. JUST THE DATE OF HORROR PRINTED IN WHITE, MAY 24TH 2022. THE GATE THAT CHANGE THE LIVES OF SO MANY. FURTHER COMPOUNDING THE TRAGEDY FOR ONE FAMILY TODAY, WE THIS MAN, ONE OF THE TEACHERSOF- KILLED IN -- HER HUSBAND HAS NOW DIED OF A HEART THAT TACK JUST 48 HOURS AFTER LOSING HIS WIFE. IN UVALDE.EN ON THE GROUND THER- UNIMAGINABLE SCENARIO FOR THE FAMILY. OF COURSE, THEY HAD KIDS. >> UNIMAGINABLE, LINDSEY. THAT IS THE WORD FOR IT YET THIS FAMILY IS DEALING WITH THE REALITY JUST TWO DAYS AFTER WHAT HAPPENED HERE BEHIND ME AT ROBB ELEMENTARY. PEOPLE ARE SHOT STILL TRYING TO NOW WORD OF THIS LOSS. THAT AND- TWO DAYS AFTER SHE WAS GUNNED STUDENTS BEHIND ME, WORD FROM HER NEPHEW THAT HER HUSBAND JOE TODAY AND DIED.IVE HEART ATTACK- EXTREMELY HEARTBREAKING, IT COMES WITH EXTREME SORROW THAT HE HAS PASSED AWAY DUE TO GRIEF. A TRULY -- PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR FAMILY, GOD HAVE MERCY ON US, THIS ISN'T EASY. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW HARD THIS IS FOR THE FAMILY. FOUR KIDS LEFT? BEHIND, LINDSE. THE OLDEST, A MARINE WHO WAS AT BOOT CAMP AT THE TIME. THE YOUNGEST IS IN SEVENTH GRADE. THOSE FOUR KIDS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO LIVE WITHOUT, NOT ONLY THEIR MOTHER, BUT THEIR FATHER AS WELL. >> JUST UNIMAGINABLE. 17 PEOPLE WERE ALSO INJURED IN A SHOOTING, WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THEIR CONDITIONS AND WHO THEY ARE? >> LINDSEY, WE KNOW THOSE 17 PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL SINCE THEN ONLY SIX REMAIN HOSPITALIZED. THREE ADULTS, THREE CHILDREN, THEIR CONDITIONS RANGE FROM GOOD TO STABLE. NO ONE IN CRITICAL CONDITION RIGHT NOW LEFT IN THE HOSPITAL. >> PHIL, OUR THANKS TO YOU. AND JUST TODAY, THE SENATE BROUGHT THE FIRST TEST TO REFORM GUN LAWS. IT WOULD'VE INCLUDED PROPOSALS ON WEAPONS BUT THERE IS A HINT THAT THEY MAY COME TOGETHER. RACHEL SCOTT HAS MORE FROM CAPITOL HILL. >> TEXAS SENATOR JON MCCORMACK TURNING TO WASHINGTON. MITCH MCCONNELL ENCOURAGING HIM TO MEET WITH DEMOCRATS AND SEE IF THERE IS A PATH FORWARD. >> I'M NOT INTERESTED IN THE SAME OLD TIRED TALKING POINTS. I'M ACTUALLY INTERESTED IN WHAT WE CAN DO TO MAKE THE TERRIBLE EVENTS THAT OCCURRED IN UVALDE LESS LIKELY IN THE FUTURE. >> TODAY, HE SPOKE WITH ANOTHER SENATOR AND THE STATE WAS TOUCHED BY TRAGEDY. CHRIS MURPHY FROM CONNECTICUT, 20 CHILDREN WERE GUNNED DOWN AT SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. >> WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF TIME, THERE IS AN URGENCY IN THE COUNTRY. >> NOW ON THE TABLE, BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR GUN SHOWS, ONLINE SALES, AND SHOWS. ALLOWING COURTS TO TEMPORARILY REMOVE REMOVE GUNS FROM PEOPLE GAME DANGEROUS. POLLS SHOW MORE THAN 80% OF AMERICANS SUPPORT THOSE POLICIES BUT FAR FROM CLEAR THAT THEY CAN GET THE TEN REPUBLICAN VOTES NEEDED. >> ARE THERE 60 VOTES FOR THAT? >> IT IS A LITTLE BIT EARLY TO TRY TO PREDICT THE OUTCOME BUT THERE IS CLEARLY A LOT OF SUPPORT. >> FOR SOME REPUBLICANS, ANY TALK ON REFORM FOR GUNS IS A NONSTARTER. ARE YOU WRONG ON THIS? [INAUDIBLE] >> IF THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS SAY BACKGROUND CHECKS? >> [INAUDIBLE] >> AND BACK IN TEXAS, THE STATE'S OTHER SENATOR QUESTIONED BY REPORTERS FROM SKY NEWS. >> CAN WE REFORM GUN LAWS? >> IT IS EASY TO GO TO POLITICS. >> IT IS IMPORTANT, IT IS AT THE HEART OF THE ISSUE. >> I GET THAT'S WHERE THE MEDIA LIKES TO GO, IT'S WHERE MANY OF THE PEOPLE LIKE TO GO. >> THE PROPOSALS FROM DEMOCRATS IN THE MEDIA INEVITABLY, WHEN A VIOLENT CYCLE PATH MURDERS PEOPLE. >> AN 18 YEAR OLD WITH TWO AR-15S. >> IF YOU WERE TO STOP VIOLENT CRIME, THE PROPOSALS THE DEMOCRATS HAVE, NONE OF THEM WOULD'VE STOPPED THIS. >> THAT DOES SEEM TO BE THE GOAL, TO TRY TO COME UP WITH SOME KIND OF BIPARTISAN PLAN. RACHEL JOINS US NOW. RACHEL, THE SENATE IS NOW IN RECESS FOR TEN DAYS BUT SENATORS ARE PLEDGING TO WORK THROUGH THAT TO GET THIS DONE? >> EXACTLY LINDSAY. I TALKED TO SO MANY DEMOCRATS TODAY AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY REALLY DO FEEL A SENSE OF URGENCY HERE. THEY WANT TO SEIZE ON THIS MOMENT AND SO REPUBLICAN SENATOR SUSAN COLLINS SAYS A SMALL GROUP OF BIPARTISAN SENATORS HAS NOW BROKEN DOWN ASSIGNMENTS. THEY DO PLAN TO MEET OVER ZOOM. BUT AS FOR TED CRUZ, HE IS NOT PART OF THOSE BIPARTISAN DISCUSSIONS. HE WILL BE SPEAKING AT THE NRA CONVENTION TOMORROW AND SO WILL BE GREG ABBOTT, AND FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP. >> WHAT DOES MITCH MCCONNELL SAY WITH REGARD TO THIS? >> HE SAYS THAT HE IS OPEN, HE WANTS AND HE IS ENCOURAGING. HE WANTS TO HAVE DISCUSSIONS WITH DEMOCRATS ON THIS ISSUE, TO SEE IF THERE IS A PATH FORWARD. AFTER TELL YOU THAT THIS COULD BE A SIGNIFICANT STEP, A SIGNIFICANT FIRST STEP IF THEY CAN ACTUALLY AGREE ON LEGISLATION. AS YOU KNOW LINDSEY, THAT IS A BIG IF BECAUSE THE MATH ON THIS HAS NOT CHANGED. DEMOCRATS AND THE SENATE MUST GET SUPPORT OF AT LEAST TEN REPUBLICANS. >> AT LEAST THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT IT. THAT IS A START FOR SURE. RACHEL SCOTT FROM THE CAPITAL, THANK YOU SO MUCH RACHEL. >> KEVIN SPACEY CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL ACTS AGAINST THREE MEN, WE HAVE THE DETAILS. THE DECLARATION FROM THE CDC DIRECTOR THAT MONKEYPOX MAY BE SPREADING INSIDE THE UNITED STATES, WE WILL EXPLAIN. UP NEXT, ROBIN ROBERTS SITS DOWN WITH THE WIFE OF A WNBA STAR BRITTNEY GRINER. WHAT'S SHE WANTS PRESIDENT BIDEN TO DO TO GET GRINER OUT OF RUSSIAN DETENTION. >> NOW TO A STORY THAT ABC NEWS HAS BEEN FOLLOWING. THE WRONGFUL DETENTION OF BRITNEY GRINER. HER WIFE CHERYL GRINER'S FINALLY BREAKING HER SILENCE AND DETAILS WITH WHAT THE LAST FEW MONTHS HAVE BEEN LIKE. >> THE FIRST WEEK I LAID ON THIS COUCH AND CRIED MY EYEBALLS OUT. I COULDN'T MOVE AND THEN I SAID, YOU HAVE TO GET UP. NOW >> THIS MORNING THE WIFE OF BRITNEY GRINER. OPENING UP THE FIRST TIME ABOUT HER DETAINMENT IN RUSSIA AND THE FIGHT TO BRING HER HOME. >> HOW DID YOU FIRST HEAR THE NEWS AND WHAT WAS YOUR INITIAL REACTION? >> I FIRST HEARD THE NEWS THROUGH BRITNEY ACTUALLY. SHE STARTED TEXTING ME AROUND 2 AM IN THE MORNING, BABE, BABE, WAKE, UP, THEY HAVE ME IN THIS ROOM. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. I TEXTED BACK, WHO ARE THEY? WHAT ROOM? THE CUSTOMS PEOPLE, THEY GRAB ME WHEN I WAS GOING THROUGH AND THEY HAVE ME IN THIS ROOM. SHE SENT ME A MESSAGE AND SAID THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE MY PHONE, DON'T TEXT ANYMORE. I AM LIKE, JUST CALL ME WHEN YOU CAN. THAT WAS IT. >> HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR YOU TO GET COMMUNICATION WITH HER AGAIN AFTER THAT? 96 DAYS. THE PHONE CALL NEVER CAME. >> YOU HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COMMUNICATE THROUGH LETTERS? >> SPORADICALLY, HERE IN THEIR. I'M GRATEFUL FOR EVEN THAT. >> ON FEBRUARY 17TH VIDEO RELEASED BY RUSSIAN AUTHORITIES APPEARS TO SHOW GRINER GOING THROUGH A PORT SECURITY NEAR MOSCOW. AN EMPLOYEE REMOVING A PACKAGE FROM THE 31 YEAR OLDS ATHLETES BAG. RUSSIAN STATE MEDIA REPORTING THAT THEY FOUND HASHISH OIL. A DEFENSE PUNISHABLE BY TEN YEARS IN PRISON. >> I KNOW YOU WANT TO SPEAK WITH PRESIDENT BIDEN. >> ABSOLUTELY, I KEEP HEARING THAT HE HAS THE POWER. SHE IS A POLITICAL PONCHO. IF THEY ARE HOLDING HER THE COOLS THEY WANT TO DO SOMETHING, THEN I WANT YOU TO DO. IT >> I KNOW THAT BLINKEN HAS REACHED OUT TO YOU AND HAS COMMUNICATED TO YOU THE TOP PRIORITY. DO YOU FEEL THAT'S THE CASE? >> I DON'T KNOW, I WAS GRATEFUL FOR THE CALL. >> HE SAYS SHE IS TOP PRIORITY BUT I WANT TO SEE IT. AT THIS POINT, I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO I'M GETTING BACK WHEN SHE COMES. BACK >> GRINER IS NOT THE ONLY AMERICAN DETAINED AT -- TREVOR REED WAS RECENTLY FREED, SEEN IN THIS VIDEO ON RUSSIAN STATE TV. ANOTHER MARINE HAS BEEN IN CUSTODY SINCE 2018. >> EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE SEPARATE PEOPLE, SEPARATE ROLLS, NO CONNECTION BESIDE WHAT THEY'RE GOING THROUGH IN RUSSIA, I OBVIOUSLY WANT HIM BACK BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT ANYBODY TO BE THERE GOING THROUGH WHAT THEY ARE GOING THROUGH. >> SHE HAD SPENT QUITE A BIT OF TIME IN RUSSIA PLAYING FOR THE TEAM THERE, WHAT WAS HER EXPERIENCE LIKE PRIOR TO THIS? >> HONESTLY, IT WAS GREAT. YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE A G.O.A.T. IF YOU CAN PLAY IN RUSSIA ON THE TEAM THAT SHE PLAYS FOR. THEY TREAT THEM LIKE SUPERSTARS. >> HAS BRITTANI EVER EXPRESS ANYTHING TO YOU ABOUT THAT? ABOUT THE EQUITY WITH THE W. ED -- >> SHE WOULD WHOLEHEARTEDLY NOT GO OVERSEAS. SHE HAS ONLY HAD ONE THING IN THE STATES, SHE MISSES ALL THAT STUFF. JUST BECAUSE SHE CAN'T MAKE ENOUGH MONEY IN THE WNBA TO SUSTAIN HER LIFE. >> HAS IT BEEN COMFORTING TO SEE ALL THE COURTS WITH THE G 42? >> YES, BUT MORE SPECIFICALLY IT IS FOR B G. IT MAKES HER KNOW THAT SHE IS NOT FORGOTTEN. OBVIOUSLY, YOU KNOW -- I KNOW THAT IT MAKES HER FEEL GOOD, SHE DOESN'T WANT TO BE. FORGOTTEN >> THE IMPRISONED GRINER EVEN SENDING A BOUQUET OF ROSES BEFORE OUR INTERVIEW. SHE HAD HER ATTORNEYS BRING THIS TODAY BECAUSE SHE KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE A LOT. >> FROM HEARTFELT LETTERS, HER PRESENCE HAS BEEN FELT ADMITS THE PAIN. >> HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP DURING THIS TIME? >> I'M OKAY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE. SHE BROUGHT ME ONE LETTER, I KNOW YOU WANT TO GO DOWN RIGHT NOW BUT DON'T YET BECAUSE EVERY DAY THAT YOU WAKE UP, THE FACT THAT YOU ARE STILL IN OUR REALITY, IT IS A REASON FOR YOU TO CONTINUE HAVING HOPE. IT GIVES YOU SO MUCH REASON TO GO DOWN. I WON'T GO DOWN UNTIL SHE IS BACK, I JUST WANT, I CAN'T, I CAN'T. EVERY SINGLE DAY MATTERS. I NEED TO BE ATTENTIVE, I NEED TO BE ALERT TO MAKE SURE SHE COMES BACK. IT IS HARD, IT IS HARD. >> OUR THANKS TO CHERYL AND ROBIN FOR THAT. STILL AHEAD ON PRIME, WITH U.S. FORCES NOW GONE. THE RIGHT TO WOMEN IN AFGHANISTAN ARE DISAPPEARING TO. WE TAKE AN IN-DEPTH LOOK. EMOJIS AND BUYING DRUGS, YES THAT IS A THING. THE CDC REPORTS THAT GUNS ARE NOW THE TOP CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG CHILDREN. WE WANTED TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS DISTURBING TREND BY THE NUMBERS. 4368 CHILDREN AGED 1 TO 18 WERE KILLED BY GUNS IN 2020. TWO THIRDS OF THOSE WERE HOMICIDE VICTIMS, LESS THAN 4000 KIDS WERE -- A 33% JUMP IN HOMICIDES IN 2019 TO 2020. THE TREND CONTINUED INTO 2021, UP ANOTHER 8%. THIS WALL TRAFFIC DEATHS HAVE STEADILY DECLINED OVER THE PAST DECADE, GUN DEATHS INCREASED 39% AMONG BLACKS AND HISPANICS. THEY HAVE BEEN UP 17% AMONG NON-HISPANIC WHITES. EARLY DATA FROM 2021 SHOWS A CONTINUED RISE IN ALL RACIAL GROUPS. IN A RECENT JOURNAL OF MEDICINE ARTICLE, THEY WROTE THE INCREASING FIRE ARM MORTALITY REFLECTS A TREND THAT SHOWS WE CONTINUE TO PROTECT OUR YOUTH FROM A PREVENTABLE CAUSE OF DEATH. PHYSICIANS URGED LAWMAKERS TO TREAT GUN DEATHS AS PREVENTABLE THROUGH REGULATION AS THEY HAVE WITH VEHICLE ACCIDENTS AND HIGHWAY SAFETY REGULATIONS. AND WE STILL HAVE LOTS MORE TO GET THROUGH. MILLIONS HITTING THE ROAD THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND, STORMS COULD IMPACT SOME OF THOSE PLANS. AND THE TIKTOK ARE MAKING TINY HOMES FOR A CAUSE. FIRST WE LOOK AT OUR TOP TRENDING STORIES ON ABCNEWS.COM. THAT IS A 0.3% MORE THAN LAST YEAR, DESPITE GAS PRICES AT RECORD LEVELS. THE NATIONAL AVERAGE NOW FOR 60 A GALLON. DELTA REPORTING 25% MORE FLYERS THAN THIS TIME LAST YEAR. >> THE CDC IS CONFIRMING NINE CASES OF MONKEYPOX HAVE NOW BEEN IDENTIFIED IN THE UNITED STATES. THE CASES WERE FOUND IN SEVEN STATES INCLUDING CALIFORNIA, FLORIDA, AND THAT INCLUDES A PROBABLE CASE IN NEW YORK CITY. THE NEWEST CASE INVOLVES A WOMAN IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA WHO RECENTLY TRAVELED TO AN AFRICAN COUNTRY WHERE THE APPEARANCE IS KNOWN TO EXIST. SOME OF THE OTHER INFECTED PEOPLE HAVE NOT BEEN ABROAD POINTING TO SOME COMMUNITY SPREAD. OFFICIALS SAY THEY WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED BY MORE CASES IN THE COMING DAYS. >> PROSECUTORS HAVE CHARGED AFTER KEVIN SPACEY WITH FOUR COUNTS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT AGAINST THREE MEN. >> THE ALLEGED INCIDENTS TOOK PLACE IN LONDON BETWEEN 2005 AND 2008. IN WESTERN ENGLAND IN APRIL 2013 AS WELL. HEAD OF THE CRIME DIVISION SAYS THE CHARGES FOLLOW A REVIEW, EVIDENCE GATHERED BY LONDON'S METROPOLITAN POLICE. 62 YEAR OLD SPACEY WAS QUESTIONED BY BRITISH POLICE THREE YEARS AGO BUT CLAIMS THIS. >> THE WORLD IS SEEING BRUCE WILLIS FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE HIS FAMILY ANNOUNCED HE WOULD BE STEPPING AWAY FROM ACTING. WILLIS, PLAYING BASKETBALL IN THIS RARE VIDEO POSTED BY HIS WIFE EMMA WILLIS AND WRITING, I SEE YOU. >> COME OUT TO THE COAST, WE'LL GET TOGETHER, HAVE A FEW LAUGHS. >> THE ACTION SUPERSTARS FIVE DAUGHTERS WIFE AND EX-WIFE DEMI MOORE ANNOUNCING THE 67 YEAR OLD WAS DIAGNOSED WITH APHASIA. AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT, WILLIS'S FANS AND FELLOW ACTORS ALL RALLYING AROUND THE SUPERSTAR, SENDING SUPPORT AND HIS FAMILY OFFERING GLIMPSES OF HIM IN PHOTOS. LIKE THIS ONE POSTED JUST SIX WEEKS AGO. BUT NOW, FANS GET A GLIMPSE OF HIM INACTION, SEEMING IN GOOD SPIRITS AND SHOOTING A BASKETBALL. >> POLICE SAY THE VICTIMS WERE ON THE BANK ON SOUTH MAIN STREET. IT BEGAN ROUGHLY 24 HOURS EARLIER WHEN AUTHORITIES SAY HE LOCKED THE WOMAN IN A BEDROOM, DESTROYED HER PHONE, AND THREATENED TO KILL HER AND HER CHILDREN. NEXT, THE WOMAN HER ALLEGED CAPTOR WENT TO THE BANK WHERE SHE REQUESTED A HEALTH LOAN. THANK EMPLOYEES RECOGNIZED THAT SHE WAS THE ONE WHO NEEDED HELP AND THEY PULLED THE ALARM NORMALLY USED IN THE EVENT OF A HOLDUP. CARBONDALE POLICE ARRIVED AND GARCIA WAS ARRESTED AT THE SCENE. >> WELCOME BACK EVERYONE, WOMEN 'S RIGHTS IN AFGHANISTAN ARE NOW UNDER ATTACK AFTER THE U.S. WITHDREW LAST AUGUST AND THE TALIBAN BECAME THE RULERS OF THE COUNTRY. MOST FEARED FOR THEIR LIVES. YOU AND REPORTED MORE THAN 2 MILLION AFGHANS FLED THE COUNTRY IN A MATTER OF DAYS. FOR THOSE LEFT BEHIND, THE TALIBAN PROMISED TO UPHOLD REFORM WHICH ALLOWED WOMEN TO WORK AND GET AN EDUCATION. SINCE THEN HOWEVER, SEVERAL DIRECTIVES HAVE BEEN ISSUED DIRECTLY IMPACTING THE LIVES AND DREAMS OF 19 WOMEN, 19 MILLION WOMEN CURRENTLY LIVING IN AFGHANISTAN. ABC NEWS MAGGIE REPORTS. >> STREETS ARE EMPTY IN AFGHANISTAN. WOMEN ARE SLOWLY DISAPPEARING FROM EVERYDAY LIFE. SCHOOLS ARE SHUT DOWN. WOMEN'S FACES ALL BUT ERASED. THEY NOW WALK THE STREETS COVERED HEAD TO TOE IN BURQAS, ACCOMPANIED BY MAIL GUARDIANS. UNDER TALIBAN DECREE, A DIRECT ATTACK ON WOMEN'S RIGHTS. >> DECIDE -- [INAUDIBLE] >> FEAR OF RETRIBUTION IS REAL HERE. TALIBAN RULE IS PUNISHING AND UNFORGIVING. THIS IS WHAT GIRLS LIVES IN AFGHANISTAN HAVE BECOME. >> [INTERPRETER] THIS IS A SHARED ROOM OF MY SISTER AND ME. THIS IS WHERE WE ARE NOW AS WE CANNOT LEAVE HOME. I'VE SO MANY DREAMS TO LEARN SO MANY THINGS AT SCHOOL. I HAD HOPED THAT I CAN ACHIEVE THIS BUT THE TALIBAN CAME AND KNOW IT IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE. [END OF TRANSLATION] >> WE DO NOT WANT THEM TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY, WE WANT THEM TO SERVE. THE TALIBAN BECAME THE RULES OF AFGHANISTAN NINE MONTHS AGO. THE U.S. FORCES PULLED OUT AFTER A 20-YEAR PRESENCE IN THE COUNTRY. THE TALIBAN PROMISED TO UPHOLD THIS. THEY WOULDN'T ERASE THE PROGRESS FROM THE LAST TWO DECADES. BUT THOSE PROMISES WERE SHORT LIVED. IT HAS NOW BEEN MORE THAN 200 DAYS SINCE THE TALIBAN BANNED TEENAGE GIRLS FROM GOING TO SCHOOL. IN RECENT YEARS, 30% OF WOMEN WHO ATTENDED PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS WERE NOT ALLOWED IN UNIVERSITIES. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES, A GENERATION OF WOMEN WERE GRANTED AND EDUCATION. BUT NOW, GIRLS SCHOOLS TEACHING GRADE 7 TO 12 REMAIN CLOSED. MOST GIRLS CONDEMNED TO A LIFE AT HOME. THIS VIDEO WAS SENT SHOWING WHEN THE TALIBAN FIRST TOOK OVER. WE USE FAKE NAMES TO PROTECT HER AND OTHERS IDENTITIES. >> I HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD JOB. NOW MY LIFE IS DESTROYED. >> MONTHS LATER, THINGS ARE DETERIORATING. >> I HAVE BEEN FORGETTING MY THINGS FOR MONTHS. I SEE GIRLS AROUND ME WHO HAVE GIVEN UP AND THEY HAVE REFUSED TO TALK ABOUT THIS FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR PARENTS. >> THERE IS A LOT OF SADNESS AND SUICIDE RATES FOR GIRLS ARE THROUGH THE ROOF WITH MANY OF THEM BURNING THEMSELVES AS A SUICIDE METHODOLOGY. THAT IS MUCH MORE TRACTABLE, THAT HAS INCREASED AS WELL. >> SHE IS AN AMERICAN WHO HAS LIVED IN AN AFGHANISTAN FOR THE PAST DECADE, CONSULTING NGOS ON HUMAN RIGHTS. >> I NEVER THOUGHT THAT AFGHANISTAN WAS A SHORT TERM FIX. LIKE ANY COUNTRY THAT IS DEVELOPED, IT TAKES YEARS. >> ADDING TO THE RESTRICTIONS ON WOMEN, GIRLS CAN NO LONGER SEE THEMSELVES ON TELEVISION. THE TALIBAN RECENTLY ORDERING ALL NEW STATIONS TO FORCE THIS FOR NEWS ANCHORS. >> [INTERPRETER] THE MINISTRY OF VICE AND VIRTUE ANNOUNCED THAT WOMEN MUST COVER THEIR FACES WITH MASKS AS OF TODAY. THE SPOKESMAN SAYS THIS IS THE FINAL DECISION AND NO NEGOTIATION OR DISAGREEMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. [END OF TRANSLATION] [INTERPRETER] THE ORDER WAS ALSO CENTER ON MEDIA AND WE WERE FORCED TO ENFORCE IT. WE CANNOT ARTICULATE THIS [END OF TRANSLATION] >> AT 22 YEARS OLD, SHE IS THE FIRST WOMEN TO STEP INTO A NEWS ROOM AFTER THE TALIBAN TAKEOVER. SINCE THEN, NEARLY 40% OF AFGHAN MEDIA STATIONS HAVE CLOSED. 80% OF WOMEN JOURNALISTS HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS. THE UN REPORTS THAT MORE THAN 2 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE FLED AFGHANISTAN SINCE JANUARY 2021. FOR THOSE LEFT BEHIND, LIFE HAS BECOME UNIMAGINABLE. AFGHANISTAN IS FACING THE WORST HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN THE WORLD. A STAGGERING 95% OF HOUSEHOLDS ARE FACING FOOD INSECURITY. 700,000 HAVE BEEN DISPLACED ACROSS THE COUNTRY, MOST OF THEM WOMEN AND CHILDREN. AND YET, AT THE TOP OF THE TALIBAN'S AGENDA, RESTRICTING THE WAY WOMEN LIVE. >> IT SEEMS IT SEEMS ALL POLITICAL AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN THESE COMMUNITIES, POVERTY AND HUNGRY IN OUR COUNTRY ARE OVER IN THE ONLY PROBLEM NOW IS THE TYPE OF CLOTHING WORN BY WOMEN. THE FEAR THAT MAN MAY BE SEEN BY A JOB. MY FATHER AND BROTHER, -- MY HOUSE WILL BE MARKED, MY WHOLE FAMILY -- BECAUSE OF THE KINDS OF CLOSE A. WHERE >> THE LIFE LIVED ISN'T EASILY FORGOTTEN. SHE IS 17 YEARS OLD LIKE MOST OF THE GIRLS NOT GONNA STAND, SHE SPENT MOST OF HER DAYS AT HOME LOOKING BACK AT WHATEVER LIFE USED TO BE. >> [INTERPRETER] YOU ARE MY COURSE BOOKS FOR SCHOOL, I'VE GOT MY MEMORY SAFE HERE. THIS IS FOR HOW FAR WE HAVE GONE WITH MATH AND ENGLISH UNTIL THE TALIBAN CAME I COULD NOT STUDY ANYMORE. THEY STOPPED US HERE. [END OF TRANSLATION] >> -- EXPERTS SAY THE BARRING GIRLS FROM GOING TO SCHOOL WILL LIKELY GO BEYOND THE CLASSROOM. >> HUGE NUMBERS OF PROBLEMS COME JUST BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM IN EDUCATION. PARENTS WILL GIVE THEIR DAUGHTERS YOUNGER AND YOUNGER TO MARRIAGE. OF COURSE, THIS MEANS MORE MORTALITY FROM -- MORE MALNUTRITION, HIGHER BIRTH RATE. THE THING THAT IS MORE DIFFICULT TO WRAP OUR MINDS AROUND IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT THERE IS A TRUE IDEOLOGY OUT THERE THAT'S BELIEVES THAT GIRLS DON'T HAVE THAT RIGHT. WHEN WE LOSE GIRLS IN THE MEANTIME? WE WILL. >> WHILE THE TALIBAN CONTROL WHAT WOMEN WEAR, RESTRICT ACCESS JOBS AND EDUCATION, THERE ARE THOSE GIRLS AND WOMEN WHO HAVE BEEN IMPACTED BY THE PROGRESS OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS. THE TALIBAN ISN'T WINNING THEIR HEARTS OR THEIR MINDS ANYTIME SOON. >> WE ARE TIRED OF ALL OF THIS MISERY AND PAIN. ISN'T IT MY RIGHT TO CHOOSE MY CLOTHES? DO I NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION AND IMPROVEMENTS LIKE OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES? >> REALLY POWERFUL REPORTING THERE FROM MAGGIE, OUR THANKS TO HER. NOW, TO A WARNING FOR PARENTS, EMOJIS ARE OF COURSE THE POPULAR WAY TO SHARE EMOTIONS AND PICTURE FORM. BUT, SOME SEEMINGLY INNOCENT EMOJIS ARE ACTUALLY CODE FOR DRUGS. THESE CODED MESSAGES OR POPULAR AMONGST TEENAGERS SEARCHING ONLINE TO BUY THEM. NBC'S CARE -- >> EMOJIS, WE USE THEM EVERY DAY IN OUR TEXT MESSAGES AND SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS. BUT, KIDS OFTEN HAVE THEIR OWN MEETINGS WITH THE SYMBOLS THAT GO RIGHT OVER ADULTS HEADS. THE DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION IS WARNING TEENAGERS ARE USING EMOJI SAYS CODES TO BUY DRUGS FROM SELLERS ONLINE. >> WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE IS AN ELECTRICAL PLUG FOLLOWED BY A SCHOOL BUS. WE JUST REALLY WANTED TO WANT TO LOOK AS UNIQUE AS POSSIBLE. HOW DOES IT FEEL KNOWING THAT YOU ARE PROVIDING THAT JOY AND HOPE TO MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ONLINE? >> I MEAN, HONESTLY SPEAKING, IT FEELS PRETTY SURREAL. YOU HAVE TO DO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. YOU REALLY HAVE TO GRIND AND PUT IN THE WORK. I THINK IF YOU DON'T ABSOLUTELY LOVE WHAT YOU'RE DOING, IT IS REALLY TOUGH TOO SUSTAINED FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.
