AMERICA'S NUMBER ONE NEWS AND POLITICS SHOW ON SUNDAY MORNINGS. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> THANKS FOR STREAMING WITH US. I AM STEPHANIE WALLACE. TODAY ON ABC NEWS LIVE WE CONTINUE TO TRACK HURRICANE IAN WHICH REGAIN STRENGTH OVERNIGHT AND IS NOW MOVING TOWARDS THE CAROLINAS AS A CATEGORY ONE STORM. AS WE TAKE A LIVE LOOK AT MOUNT PLEASANT IN SOUTH CAROLINA THERE ON YOUR SCREEN, YOU CAN SEE THE CAMERA SHAKING JUST A BIT AS HEAVY RAIN AND BANDS MOVE THROUGH. TODAY WE ARE GETTING A FIRSTHAND LOOK AT THE DEVASTATION LEFT BEHIND IN FLORIDA. YOU CAN SEE FIRES ABLAZE THERE. FLOODING HOMES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE COAST. BUT THE FOCUS NOW IS RECOVERY AND REBUILDING. AT LEAST 21 PEOPLE HAVE DIED DUE TO THE STORM, THAT NUMBER EXPECTED TO. RISE PRESIDENT BIDEN GIVING REMARKS JUST A FEW MOMENTS AGO. >> WE ARE WORKING VERY CLOSELY WITH THE GOVERNOR AND THE ENTIRE FLORIDA DELEGATION OF DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS MAKING SURE THAT WE CAN DO EVERYTHING WE CAN, INCLUDING NOW SEARCH AND RESCUE IT RECOVERY. WE BELIEVE IT WILL COME ON AFTER A WHILE FOR A LONG WHILE. WHATEVER IT TAKES WE ARE GOING TO BE THERE AS ONE NATION AND ONE AMERICA AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO WALK AWAY. >> WE WANT TO GO AHEAD AND CHECK IN WITH GEO BENITEZ, WHO HAS BEEN COVERING THE STORY FOR US ALL WEEK LONG. GEO. YOU ARE NOW IN VENICE, FLORIDA. AND I CAN SEE SOME OF THE DAMAGE MANU. THERE >> -- THIS IS THE VENICE, THEATER AND IT REALLY IS THE HEART OF THIS COMMUNITY. SO MANY PEOPLE WALKING BY TODAY WHO ARE JUST HEARTBROKEN BY. THIS BECAUSE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT HAS SO MUCH MONEY PUT INTO IT JUST RECENTLY TO REALLY REBUILD IT AFTER COVID AND REALLY GET GOING. I WANT TO GO AHEAD AND SHOW YOU THESE IMAGES OF WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE ALONG FLORIDA'S GULF COAST. TAKE A LOOK AT THESE, PHOTOS THEY WERE TAKEN BY OUR TEAM. HERE WE TALK ABOUT THE WIND. WE TALK ABOUT THE WATER. BUT WE DO NOT ALWAYS THINK ABOUT THE FIRE THREAT THAT COMES WITH SEVERE STORMS. THESE HOMES RIGHT HERE AND ALONG WITH THE CARS JUST COMPLETELY BURST. AND IT IS JUST DEVASTATING TO SEE THAT. I WANT TO SHOW YOU WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW. THIS, HERE, IS THE BEST LEADER AGAIN. SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HERE JUST WALKING AROUND, AGAIN, THEY ARE WALKING AROUND. THEY ARE TAKING THIS IN. AND THEY ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO NEXT BECAUSE SO MUCH OF THIS JUST DOES NOT HAVE POWER HERE IN VENICE. SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE NO POWER. THEY ARE LOOKING FOR FOOD. AND THAT IS WHAT WE ARE SEEING ALONG FLORIDA'S GULF COAST. LET'S GO AHEAD AND CHECK IN WITH GREG JUICER NOW, HE'S BEEN FOLLOWING THIS STORM. NO ONE HAS GONE FROM FLORIDA AND AS FLORIDA IS REBUILDING IN TRYING TO RECOVER, OF COURSE THE CAROLINAS ARE NOW FACING THESE THREATS. THEY'VE BEEN GETTING HAMMERED ALL DAY LONG NOW. GREG, WHAT IS THE LATEST ON THE STORM? >> LANDFALL OCCURRING EITHER AT THIS MOMENT ARE JUST MOMENTS FROM NOW, GIO. WE'RE WATCHING THE CORE SITTING ABOUT FIVE OR SO MILES OFF OF THE COAST OF THIS POINT. THAT COURT KEEPS ON WOBBLING. JUST A LITTLE BIT OF A SHIFT, REAL QUICKLY, TO THE. WEST THEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN YOU HAVE LANDFALL. THAT IS OCCURRING NORTH OF CHARLESTON, ABOUT 30 MILES NORTH AS YOU HEAD UP COMING TO THE GEORGETOWN TYPE AREA, MCCLELLANVILLE. YOU CAN SEE THE CIRCULATION AGAIN AS IT STARTS TO DRAW ITS WAY IN. MINUTES, NOW, I WOULD SAY THE CENTER IS RIGHT THERE. SITTING IN THE SHALLOWS. TAKING A LOOK AT HOW BIG THIS STORM IS, THE STORM CAT CLOUD STRETCHING ALL THE WAY UP TO ABOUT PLATTSBURGH, NEW YORK AT THE BORDER OF CANADA STRETCHING FROM MAINE INTO NOVA SCOTIA. THAT IS THE BETTER PART OF ABOUT 1000 MILES OF SCOPE FOR THE CLOUD COVER WITH THE TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTENDING 200 PLUS MILES AWAY FROM MCCORMICK. IT STILL IS WITH THE 200 TO 300 MILE PER HOUR CORE OF A TROPICAL SYSTEM. IT IS STARTING TO TRANSITION TO POST TROPICAL, BUT DOES NOT TAKE ANY OF THE BITE OUT OF IT. STILL 47 INCHES. MYRTLE BEACH OUT FOR NOW AN ALREADY IN THAT FORECAST RANGE AND IT STILL IS GOING UP. WATCHING THE BUOYS JUST GOING LIKE THIS FOR THE SENSOR IN TERMS OF THAT SURGE. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A MAJOR FLOOD, THREAT HERE. WE STILL HAVE FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS OUT FOR CHARLESTON. THEY STRETCH ALL THE WAY UP TO MYRTLE BEACH. AS WE START HEADING ON UP TO THE OUTER BANKS, CAPE FEAR SEEING FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS NOW IN EFFECT. TO IRAN MORE HEAD, CITY TOO. AND THAT COULD GO UP TO CAPE HATTERAS AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE LATER AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS AS HE AND DOES MAKE LANDFALL. YES, AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME. WE ARE TAKING IT WITH OUR FLOODING THREAT, HERE FLOODWATERS. OUT EXTENDING ALL THE WAY PAST, NOW, THE SPINE OF THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS INTO WEST VIRGINIA. THAT IS A PRETTY LONG DISTANCE. THEN FROM NORFOLK INTO THE SOUTHERN TIP OF THE DELMARVA PENINSULA. RAINFALL, 3 TO 6 INCHES. EXTENDING INTO NEW YORK CITY. EXTENDING INTO COASTAL MASSACHUSETTS. NORTH TO ABOUT NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS, RIGHT ON THE BORDER OF NEW HAMPSHIRE. JUST A TON OF RAINFALL. 1 TO 3 INCHES OF RAIN, FARTHER INLAND, TWO, AND THEN ANOTHER THING TO PUT ON TOP OF THIS AN, A THREAT IS BECOMING MORE MERCHANTS NOW IS THE TORNADO THREAT. TORNADO, WATCH, OUT OF ALREADY SEEN WARNINGS AS FAR NORTH AS NORTH CAROLINA. , GEO WE ARE FAR FROM OVER THIS NOW. WE ARE GOING TO, SEE FOR THE NEXT HOUR AT, LEAST THIS CONTINUE TO UNFOLD. BY, THE WAY NOW 92 MILE PER HOUR WIND GUSTS IN SOUTH CAROLINA. >> WOW. 92 MILES PER HOUR. FAR FROM OVER. , GREG THANK YOU SO. MUCH STANDBY, WE HAVE ELLEN LOPEZ IN CHARLESTON. ON THE GROUND ALL DAY LONG. THEY'RE ELWYN, WE HAVE WATCHED AS THIS STORM PROGRESSED MORE AND MORE AND MORE. WHAT ARE YOU EXPERIENCING THERE NOW? , GIO,. I WANT TO TELL. YOU WE HAVE BEEN LIVE FOR HOURS TO. OUR RAIN HAS PICKED UP IT IS RELENTLESS. IT'S COMING DOWN SIDEWAYS SO WE ARE COVERED HERE AND PROTECTED IN THEIR CREW IS SAFE, WHICH IS THE MAIN CONCERN JUST TO KEEP EVERYONE SAFE. AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT SOME OF THE RAIN, BECAUSE OF THE WIND GUSTS, ARE JUST SPIRALLING THIS WAY AND HITTING US FROM TIME TO TIME. SO THAT IS WHY OFFICIALS HERE HAVE ASKED PEOPLE TO STAY PUT. IF YOU DID NOT GET OUT OF THERE YESTERDAY, NOW IS THE TIME TO HUNKER DOWN. YOU ARE IN ONE OF THESE LOW-LYING AREAS, WHERE YOU NEED TO SEEK HIGHER GROUND AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED WITH. YOU AND THAT YOUR LOVED ONES, ESPECIALLY, KNOW WHERE YOU ARE BECAUSE WE KNOW WITH THESE STORMS AND WITH HURRICANES, YOU COULD LOSE COMMUNICATIONS. SOMETIMES THAT SIMPLY MEANS THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW WHERE YOUR LOVED ONES OFF FOR CERTAIN AMOUNTS OF TIME. YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE KNOWS WHERE YOU ARE, AND THAT YOU ARE COMPLETELY SAFE BEFORE THIS THING HITS. BECAUSE WE'VE ALREADY SEEN POWER OUTAGES HERE IN SOUTH CAROLINA, RIGHT. NOW CHARLESTON IS BRACING FOR THIS LANDFALL. WHICH COULD HAPPEN ANY MINUTE NOW BETWEEN HERE IN MYRTLE BEACH. GAIL? >> THAT'S, RIGHT. ELLEN AND WE KNOW THAT THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOST SO MUCH POWER, WE KNOW THAT THEY ARE ALSO ABLE TO STREAM WITH US RIGHT NOW. SO I AM SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED THOSE WARNINGS. ALSO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT STANDING IN THAT STANDING WATER AS THE STORM PROGRESSES, IT IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. DO NOT GET OUT, THERE DO NOT. DRIVE DO NOT TO ANY OF. THAT ELWYN, THIS REGION, THIS AREA OF THE U.S., UNFORTUNATELY HAS BEEN HIT BY STORMS OFTEN. SO TELL ME, WHERE THEY PREPARE, ARE THEY READY HERE? >> LISTEN. THEY ARE PREPARED, JIM. THAT IS WHAT OFFICIALS ARE TELLING. US AND THE LAST OF THE HURRICANE MADE LANDFALL HERE IN SOUTH CAROLINA IT WAS IN 2016 WITH HURRICANE MATTHEW. SO, THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED IT, THAT WAS SIGNIFICANT FLOODING, BY THE. WAY WE ARE GETTING ANOTHER ONE OF THESE WIND GUSTS, SO BEAR WITH ME. BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE OF, SAID WE DO NOT WANT TO GO THROUGH THAT AGAIN. SO THEY GOT OUT. BUT OTHER PEOPLE KIND OF SOUGHT MORE INLAND SAFETY, BUT WE KNOW WITH THIS STORM THAT IS SO MASSIVE, THAT THE IMPACTS ARE GOING TO GO FAR INLAND. AS GREG WAS EXPLAINING TO US EARLIER. RIGHT, NOW OFFICIALS ARE JUST CAUTIONING PEOPLE TO STAY PUT. KNOCK IT ON THE ROAD. WE DID SEE ONE CARGO OVER THIS BRIDGE. THAT IS WHAT OFFICIALS WANT YOU NOT TO DO. GIO? >> WE KNOW WHEN YOU ARE TALKING A LITTLE EARLIER, TALKING ABOUT THIS IDEA THAT THESE FOLKS, THEY ARE IN SOUTH CAROLINA, NOW. THEY ARE LOOKING BACK AT THESE IMAGES OF THE DEVASTATION HERE IN FLORIDA. RIGHT HERE. IT MUST LOOK TO THE, SAID OH N, YES, IT IS A WEAKER STORM. BUT NO DOUBT ABOUT IT THAT SAME STORM SYSTEM IS NOW COMING THIS WAY. THERE WAS A FEAR, THERE WASN'T THERE? >> ABSOLUTELY, GIO. THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE, SAID WE DON'T TO CHANCE THIS. WE DON'T WANT WHAT HAPPENS. WE KNOW THAT IT'S NOT THE SAME, RIGHT? IT'S NOT PACKING IN THE SAME AMOUNT OF WIND. YES BUT PEOPLE DO NOT WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCES. THE MAIN, THREAT OF COURSE, FLASH FLOODING. AND THAT LIFE-THREATENING STORM SURGE COULD REALLY IMPACT PEOPLE, HERE. SO PEOPLE DID NOT WANT TO TAKE CHANCES, ESPECIALLY AFTER SEEING WHAT PEOPLE IN FLORIDA HAVE TO GO THROUGH IN THE END. GIO? >> ELWYN YOU LOPEZ ON THE GROUND IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA. PLEASE STAY SAFE. STEPHANIE, THIS IS WHAT WE ARE. SEEING HOW EXPENSIVE THIS STORM IS. HERE IN FLORIDA, NOW ALL THE WAY UP TO SOUTH CAROLINA. UITE DIFFICULT FOR█-█%█P█ RUSSI█ WELCOME BACK NOW TO THE WARREN. UKRAINE RUSSIA HAS FORMALLY AND ILLEGALLY ANNEXED OCCUPIED TERRITORY IN UKRAINE'S EAST AND SOUTH. PRESIDENT BIDEN BLASTING THE MOVE, SAYING RUSSIA IS SHOWING, QUOTE, CONTEMPT FOR PEACEFUL NATIONS EVERYWHERE. TAKE A LOOK AT THAT ANNOUNCEMENT THAT TOOK PLACE TODAY. AND TAKE A LISTEN. RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN THERE, CELEBRATING BY TAKING PART OF A HANDSHAKE AND HUDDLE WITH RUSSIAN APPOINTED LEADERS IN THOSE RUSSIAN OCCUPIED REGIONS. JOINING ME NOW WITH THE LATEST IS ABC NEWS FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT TOM SOUFI BURRIDGE, LIVE IN KYIV. TOM, TELL US ABOUT THAT HANDSHAKE. WHAT DOES IT TELL YOU ABOUT THE TONE IN THE ROOM? THEY SEEM ELATED. >> YES, STEPHANIE. I THINK THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE KREMLIN TODAY WAS -- NATIONALISM, RUSSIAN NATIONALISM. PUTIN WAS TRYING TO PAINT A PICTURE OF A COUNTRY THAT IS THE VICTIM IN ALL THIS. ALTHOUGH WE KNOW THAT RUSSIA IS THE INVESTOR. IT HAS INVADED UKRAINE. BUT I THINK THIS WAS A TIME FOR PUTIN LAST RALLY AROUND THEIR LEADER, A LEADER WHO HAS BEEN WEAKENED IN RECENT WEEKS. BECAUSE HERE IN UKRAINE THE RUSSIAN MILITARY HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK SIGNIFICANTLY. AND EVEN AS HE TALKS, THERE ARE THREATS OF THE UKRAINIAN MILITARY SURROUNDING RUSSIAN TROOPS OUT IN THE EAST, AROUND THE STRATEGIC TOWN ONCE AGAIN. BUT PUTIN WAS PUTTING ON A BRAVE FACE. WE HAVE LOTS OF PREDICTABLE RHETORIC FROM. HIM FALSEHOODS ABOUT UKRAINE, AND FIERY LANGUAGE ABOUT THE WEST AND THE UNITED STATES. >> DURING THAT ANNOUNCEMENT PUTIN DELIVERED A LENGTHY SPEECH WHILE ANNOUNCING THE ANNEXATION. WHAT'S TODAY YOU THE MOST? >> STEPHANIE, I THINK ONE KEY POINT WAS THAT PUTIN WANTED TO GET ACROSS, AND HE DID, BUT HE WANTED TO SAY OKAY. THESE TERRITORIES THAT WE SUDDENLY ANNEXED, IF YOU ATTACKED THEM THAT IS AN ATTACK ON RUSSIA. AND THAT IS HIS ATTEMPT AT THE MOMENT IN HIS POSITION OF WEAKNESS TO TRY TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE, YOU'RE TRYING TO UP THE ANTE AGAIN. I DON'T THINK THAT WILL CHANGE A MASSIVE AMOUNT ON THE BATTLEFIELD. OR REALLY IN TERMS OF POLICY FROM WESTERN NATIONS LIKE THE UNITED STATES AND THEIR SOLID SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE. THERE WERE OTHER, MOMENTS AND THERE WERE SOME BIZARRE -- AND OTHER WERE PLENTY OF HISTORICAL REFERENCES. PUTIN PLAYING KIND OF THE VICTIM AT ALL. THIS HISTORICAL -- ABOUT THE DISSOLUTION OF THE SOVIET UNION BEING A TRAGEDY. AND ALSO A BIZARRE REFERENCE TO THE USE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS BY THE UNITED STATES AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR. REMEMBER, UNITED STATES IS THE ONLY COUNTRY TO HAVE USED NUCLEAR WEAPONS. I THINK THAT WAS A SUBTLE REMINDER, BY PUTIN, AS WE'VE SEEN ON MANY OCCASIONS IN RECENT WEEKS, THAT HE HAS A NUCLEAR ARSENAL. WHETHER NOT HE IS PREPARED TO USE IT OR NOT IS ITS OWN QUESTION. >> WE'VE SEEN SOME RECENT ESCALATIONS, AS WELL,. TOM AS YOU KNOW. A RUSSIAN MISSILE STRIKE ON THE HUMANITARIAN CONVOY HAS KILLED AT LEAST 26 PEOPLE. WHAT DO THESE RECENT ESCALATIONS FROM PUTIN TELL YO? >> I THINK, STEPHANIE, THIS MISSILE ATTACK IS PARTICULARLY INTERESTING. MY TEAM WAS IN THAT SITE WHICH WAS HIT BY RUSSIAN MISSILES. WE WERE THERE JUST ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO. I CAN, TELL YOU THAT IS AN AREA ON THE EDGE OF ZAPORIZHZHIA CITY. AN AREA CONTROLLED BY THE UKRAINIANS. AND CIVILIAN CONVOYS GOING TO THE PARTY SPECIFIC SITE ON A DAILY BASIS, AND GO INTO RUSSIAN OCCUPIED TERRITORIES IN SEPARATION. RUSSIA WOULD KNOW THAT THAT AREA HAS BEEN CRAWLING WITH CIVILIANS TODAY, LOTS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN. THEY'RE YET HIT REPEATEDLY WITH MISSILES. KILLED 26 PEOPLE AND INJURED AT LEAST 80. RUSSIAN STATE MEDIA WAS QUICK TO BLAME UKRAINE. AND ALL THAT WE CANNOT PROVE THESE THINGS. BECAUSE OF THE FOG REPORT. IT DOES HAVE ALL OF THE HALLMARKS OF A CLASSIC ATTRACT BY RUSSIA, WHICH THEN USES IN ITS PROPAGANDA JUST BEFORE, CONVENIENTLY, IS GOING TO ILLEGALLY ANNEXED UKRAINIAN TERRITORY AND CLAIM ON STATE CONTROLLED MEDIA. UKRAINE'S KILLING CIVILIANS AND THAT IS WHY HE HAD TO OCCUPY AND AXES TERRITORIES. THAT IS A CLASSIC THING THAT RUSSIA HAS DONE, AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN HERE IN UKRAINE. I WAS REPORTING HERE THIS COUNTRY IS FAR BACK AS IT YEARS AGO. I SAW THESE TYPES OF FORCE CLAIMS AND FALSE ATTACKS ON A REGULAR BASIS. >> THE FALL OF WAR, YOU SAT IT. NEWS ON, WAR -- AFTER THE RUSSIAN VOTE. EXPLAIN THE SANCTIONS TO US AND WHAT EFFECT THEY COULD HAVE? >> THE U.S. IS TARGETING MORE THAN 270 LAWMAKERS IN RUSSIA, SOME PEOPLE MORE CLOSELY LINKED TO THE KREMLIN. WESTERN EUROPE IS ALSO HAVING ITS OWN SAKE SHUNTS AS WELL. LOOK, THE SANCTIONS WILL TARGET INDIVIDUALS AND WILL MEAN THEY CANNOT TRAVEL OUT OF RUSSIA DO WESTERN COUNTRIES. AND IT WILL MEAN THE DELAY OF ANY FINANCIAL ASSETS AND WESTERN COUNTRIES, THEY COULD BE SEIZED OR THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET HOLD OF THEM. BUT I WOULD SAY THAT ALTHOUGH THESE ARE HUGELY SYMBOLIC AT THE MOMENT I DO NOT THINK THAT THESE TYPES OF SANCTIONS WILL ACTUALLY HAVE, IN REALITY, A HUGE AMOUNT OF DIFFERENCE ON THE GROUND. GIVEN THE FACT THAT PEOPLE HAVE MOVED THEIR ASSETS LONG AGO, AND REALISTICALLY THESE TYPES OF RUSSIANS ARE PROBABLY NOT GOING TO BE TRAVELING TO THE WEST ANYTIME SOON. BUT IT IS AN IMPORTANT SYMBOLIC STANCE, AND AGAIN THE UNITED STATES AND ITS ALLIES SHOWING THAT THEY WILL TAKE STEPS AGAINST RUSSIA, STAND UP IN SUPPORT UKRAINE. >> ABSOLUTELY,. TOM THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS UPDATE AND FOR YOUR REPORT. LIVE FROM KYIV THERE FOR. US THANK YOU AGAIN. COMING UP, WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE FIRST FEMALE BLACK SUPREME COURT JUSTICE. DAYS BEFORE THE START OF HER FIRST TERM ON THE COURT. THAT IS COMING UP NEXT. >> WE'RE DOING THIS TOGETHER, MAN. >> WELCOME BACK, LET'S GET YOU SOME OF TODAY'S TOP HEADLINES. AND THE U.S. GRAPPLES WITH RISING INFLATION, NEW DATA IS OUT TODAY SHOWING THAT CONSUMER SPENDING IS UP MONTH OVER MONTH. THAT IS A SIGN THE ECONOMY IS HOLDING UP EVEN AS INFLATION LIFTS PRICES FOR FOOD, RENT AND OTHER ESSENTIALS. AND THE WHITE HOUSE IS SCALING BACK ITS STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS PLAN FOR MORE THAN 770,000 BORROWERS. THE ASSERTION COMES AMID LEGAL CHALLENGES WITH PRIVATE BANKS. BORROWERS WITH HAWKINS AND FEDERAL FAMILY EDUCATION LOANS WILL NO LONGER QUALIFY FOR THAT PROGRAM. AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE TRIAL OF FORMER TRUMP ADVISOR TOM BARRACK. GOVERNOR PROSECUTORS IN THE CASE OF THE LONGTIME TRUMP ALLY REDOLENT HUNDREDS OF EMAILS AND TEXTS SENT BY BARRACK INCLUDING MESSAGES SENT TO IVANKA TRUMP AND JARED KUSHNER. HE WAS ACCUSED OF ILLEGALLY LOBBYING ON BEHALF OF THE UAE. SUPREME COURT CHART JUSTICE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON HAS NOW BEEN TREATED WITH THE TRADITIONAL INVESTITURE CEREMONY INSIDE OF THE U.S. SUPREME COURT. WE ARE LOOKING AT PHOTOS OF THE FIRST BLACK WOMAN JUSTICE ON THE SUPREME COURT AFTER THE EVENTS EARLIER TODAY. AFTER THE CEREMONY SHE WAS SURROUNDED BY HER PEERS JUSTICES FRIENDS AND FAMILY. ON MONDAY THE COURT WILL GET BACK IN ACTION TAKING ON A FRESH LIST OF MAJOR CASES EVEN THIS CONTROVERSY CONTINUES AROUND THAT ABORTION RULING FROM LAST TERM. YOU SEE THIS FOLKS RIGHT? THERE THEY ARE JOINING ME NOW TO DISCUSS. ABC NEWS SENIOR WASHINGTON REPORTER DEVIN DWYER. GREAT TO SEE. YOU ARE SOMEBODY WHO KNOWS JUDGE JACKSON PERSONALLY, DOES THE FIRST BLACK WOMEN JUSTICE ON THE OHIO SUPREME COURT. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO BOTH OF YOU FOR BEING HERE. DEVIN, I WANT TO START WITH. YOU JUSTICE JACKSON HAS ALREADY BEEN SWORN IN IT IS CURRENTLY PARTICIPATING IN CASES. TODAY IS PURELY A CEREMONIAL TRADITION, RIGHT? GIVE US AN IDEA OF WHAT TOOK PLACE INSIDE OF THE HISTORIC COURTROOM. >> THERE WERE NO CAMERAS INSIDE THAT COURTROOM, STEPHANIE. SO IT WAS A SPECIAL TREE TO BE ABLE TO WITNESS THE HISTORY. IT IS A RIGHT OF PASSAGE FOR EVERY JUSTICE TO TAKE THEIR SEAT ON THE BENCH AND TODAY WAS ESPECIALLY POIGNANT GIVEN THE HISTORY THAT YOU TALKED ABOUT OF THE MOMENT. THEN YOU SEE JACKSON IMMERSING AFTER THE CEREMONY LASTED JUST ABOUT TEN MINUTES. BUT IT WAS A PACKED COURTROOM WITH DIGNITARIES, THE PRESIDENTS CASE WAS THERE AND THE VICE PRESIDENT AND THEIR SPOUSES RETIRED JUSTICES KENNEDY AND BREYER WERE THERE AS WELL. EVEN GINNI THOMAS THE WIFE OF CLARENCE THOMAS WAS SEEN IN THE ROOM, SPEAKER PELOSI AND FORMER HOUSE SPEAKER PAUL RYAN. WHO YOU MAY NOT KNOW IS RELATED BY MARRIAGE TO KETANJI BROWN JACKSON. HUGE CROWD OF SUPPORTERS AND FANS PACKED THAT ROOM FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER TWO AND A HALF YEARS. SINCE COVID. AND THERE SHE. IS JUSTICE JACKSON OUT WEARING THAT BLACK COKE CLOAK, THAT ROBE, FOR THE FIRST-TIME. TAKING THAT SEAT AT THE END OF THE BENCH. AS YOU HEAR JUSTICES DO. AND, THEN THAT CEREMONIAL IMAGE. WALKING OUT WITH THE CHIEF JUSTICE. SOMETHING THAT EVERY NEW JUSTICE DOES. WALK DOWN THOSE MARBLE STEPS IN FRONT OF CAMERAS. I'LL TELL YOU. SOMETHING I ASKED HER A QUESTION, HOW DOES IT FEEL? AND SHE DIDN'T ANSWER. ME LIKE A GUY JUDGE SHE SIMPLY LOOKED MY WAY I DID NOT TAKE THE REPORTER'S QUESTION. BUT CLEARLY SHE WAS THINKING OF THE HISTORY OF THIS MOMENT. >> DEVIN, GOOD JOB TRYING. I KNEW YOU WOULD. TRYING TO GET A QUESTION OUT THERE. SHORT CEREMONY BUT SWEET I AM, SURE, FOR HER AND YOUR PEERS IN HER FAMILY AS WELL. JUDGE BROWN I WANT TO ASK ABOUT TODAY'S CEREMONY, JUSTICE JACKSON SAT IN THE SAME CHER USED BY CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN MARSHALL WHO WAS APPOINTED IN 1801. WHEN THE COURT WAS ONLY COMPRISED OF 18 MAN. . WHITE MEN. WHAT DO YOU SAY OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS MOMENT FOR JUDGE JACKSON? >> LET ME FIRST OF, SAY ONE, I DO NOT KNOW THE JUSTICE PERSONALLY. I ONLY KNOW HER THROUGH HER WRITINGS AND OF COURSE I AM A FAN FROM AFAR. I DO KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE ON THE SUPREME COURT AND I THINK THAT AS SHE SITS IN THAT SEAT SHE IS REALLY THINKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, JUSTICE MARSHALL. HE WAS JUST SUCH AN ICONIC JUSTICE AND I THINK SHE IS FEELING THE WEIGHT OF HISTORY. BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT SHE IS WELL PREPARED FOR THIS MOMENT. SO WHILE SHE IS SOAKING IN THE HISTORIC NATURE OF THIS MOMENT SHE KNOWS THERE IS A LOT OF TOUGH WORK AHEAD. AND I SUSPECT SHE IS ALREADY STARTED REPEATING BRIEFS IN PREPARATION FOR THE OPENING SESSION. SO I'M SURE SHE FEELS THE WEIGHT OF HISTORY. AND REALLY FEELS IT IN A WAY THAT IT IS HARD TO DESCRIBE, AND THEN SHE SAT IN THAT SEAT AND FELT EVERYBODY'S HOPES AND DREAMS JUST FOCUS ON YOU ARE SEEING THAT REALITY COME TO PASS. >> A SIGNIFICANT, MOMENT INDEED. I THINK IT WAS WISHFUL THINKING ON OUR PART THAT YOU MENTION. THIS IS A PERSONAL OF ME. >> THAT WE? ALL WE ALL WANT TO BE FRIENDS WITH, HER RIGHT? >> ANOTHER QUESTION FOR YOU JUDGE, BROWN JUSTICE CURRENTLY ON THE. BENCH SIX JUSTICES NOMINATED BY REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTS AND ONLY THREE WERE NOMINATED BY DEMOCRATS. JUSTICES, OF COURSE, ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES. BUT THE CREDIBILITY OF THE COURT HAS BEEN CALLED INTO QUESTION RECENTLY AFTER THE LEAKED DRAFT OPINION ON ROE V. WADE. AND SUPREME COURT JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS'S LIFE. HER TEXT MESSAGES REVEALING THAT SHE WAS IN COMMUNICATION WITH TRUMP STAFFERS AND ELECTION OFFICIALS ABOUT OVERTURNING THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. NOW, WHAT IMPACT, JUDGE, DO YOU THINK SHE WILL HAVE ON THIS COURT AND ITS CREDIBILITY? >> YEAH, IT IS HARD TO KNOW. BUT I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR THE JUSTICE, THE NEW JUSTICE. AND FOR CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS. I THINK HE IS GOING TO WORK REALLY HARD TO SUSTAIN COLLEGIALITY AMONGST ALL THE JUSTICES. I THINK WHAT THE PUBLIC DOES NOT REALIZES THAT EXCEPT FOR THE FEW HOT BUTTON ISSUES, THE JUSTICES WILL WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH EACH OTHER. THEY WILL SOCIALIZE TOGETHER. AND FOR THE MOST PART, I THINK THEY WILL BE COLLEGIAL WITH EACH OTHER. FOR JUSTICE BROWN JACKSON, WHAT SHE IS FACING IS THAT THE EYES OF THE NATION WILL BE UPON HER, AND SHE IS GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT AS SHE CONDUCTS HERSELF, SHE WILL DO IT IN THE WAY SHE HAS TO ABOUT HER CAREER, TO UPHOLD THE INTEGRITY OF THE JUDICIARY. I THINK FOR JUSTICE ROBERTS THERE IS NOTHING MORE IMPORTANT TO HIM, HE'S AN INSTITUTIONALIST. HE CARES VERY MUCH ABOUT THE INTEGRITY, THE IMPARTIALITY OF THE COURT. AND THE CONFIDENCE OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN THE COURT. I THINK SHE WILL BE HIS ALLY IN THAT REGARD, BECAUSE SHE ALSO CARES ABOUT THAT. AND THAT SHE WILL WORK VERY HARD TO BRIDGE WHAT HAS BEEN SEEN AS A POLITICAL DIVIDE RIGHT NOW. AS A FORMER JURIST, IT DISAPPOINTS ME THAT PEOPLE PERCEIVE THE COURT AND THAT THE COURT HAS GIVEN THEM A REASON TO BE VIEWED POLITICALLY. >> JOSH BROWN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND FOR YOUR INSIGHTS. DEVIN DWYER FOR US IN WASHINGTON, AS. WELL THANK YOU SO MUCH. WITH THE SUPREME COURT EXPECTED YOUR CASE FOR THE NEW TERM STARTING ON MONDAY, I'M SURE WE WILL BE TOUCHING BASE WITH BOTH OF YOU VERY VERY SOON. I AM STEPHANIE RAMOS, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. THAT DOES IT FOR US THIS HALF HOUR. OR REMEMBER, ABC NEWS LIVE IS HERE FOR YOU EVERY DAY WITH THE LATEST NEWS, CONTEXT, AND ANALYSIS. OUR COVERAGE OF HURRICANE IAN CONTINUES RIGHT AFTER THIS.
