 >> ABC NEWS IS AMERICA'S NUMBER ONE NEWS. >> GOOD MORNING, I HAVE ALEXIS CHRISTOPHER. US THANKS FOR STREAMING WITH US. WE WANT TO GET RIGHT TO OUR TOP STORY, HURRICANE IAN BEARING DOWN ON SOUTH CAROLINA AFTER LEAVING A TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION TO FLORIDA. PRESIDENT BIDEN HAS DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR SOUTH CAROLINA AND CHARLESTON, NOW UNDER A FLASH FLOOD WARNING AS IN TAKES AIM. IT IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL THIS AFTERNOON AS A CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE WITH LIFE THREATENING STORM SURGE AS HIGH AS SEVEN FEET. AT LEAST 11 PEOPLE HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES IN FLORIDA AND THAT DEATH TOLL IS EXPECTED TO GROW AS SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS ARE UNDERWAY. THE GOVERNOR CONFIRMING MORE THAN 700 RESCUES SINCE IT MADE LANDFALL ON THE GULF COAST. THE SCALE OF THE DAMAGE NOW BECOMING MORE CLEAR, A MOBILE HOME COMMUNITY IN FORT MYERS BEACH, COMPLETELY DESTROYED. AND THE STATE UTILITY REPORTING MORE THAN 2 MILLION CUSTOMERS ARE STILL WITHOUT POWER. WE HAVE FULL COVERAGE TODAY, CHIEF METEOROLOGIST GINGER ZEE STARTS US OFF WITH THE LATEST FROM FORT LAUDERDALE OR FLORIDA. >> A CONCERT STREAM OF OVERWHELMING IMAGES, A GLARING REFLECTION OF HURRICANE IAN'S POWER. THE BEHEMOTHS MAKING LANDFALL WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AS A CATEGORY FOUR. THE VICIOUS WINDS TOPPING 150 MILES PER HOUR, GOUGING SOUTHWEST PARTS OF FLORIDA. MAKING HISTORY AS ONE OF THE TOP TEN STRONGEST ON RECORD IN THE UNITED STATES. THE MONSTER STORM CLAIMING SEVERAL LIVES, SO FAR AT LEAST 11 PEOPLE KILLED. THAT NUMBER, EXPECTED TO RISE. >> THIS COULD BE THE DEADLIEST HURRICANE IN FLORIDA'S HISTORY. >> ONE OF THOSE HARD-HIT REGIONS, FORT MYERS BEACH,. WE NAVIGATED THROUGH THE DAM OF DESTRUCTION IN LEFT BEHIND. IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD ALONE, THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF HOMES WE CAN SEE FROM ARGENTINA THAT EACH OF THESE TOOK ON AT LEAST 12 FEET OF WATER, THEY ARE ALL TOTAL LOSSES. AS THE SUN ROSE THURSDAY MORNING, WE NAVIGATED THROUGH THE DONNER CONSTRUCTION BEING LEFT BEHIND. >> THE ROADS ARE. ROCK AND THIS IS GOING TO MAKE IT SO HARD FOR PEOPLE TO GET INTO RESCUE FOLKS. >> THE SANIBEL CAUSEWAY IS IMPASSABLE AFTER BEING BATTERED BY THE EPIC SURGE. COAST GUARD RAISING PEOPLE TRAPPED NEAR THE. ISLAND AT THE SIESTA BAY RV PARK, WE MEET KELLY, WHO RODE OUT THE STORM WITH HER. CATCH CLIMBING INTO BED AS THE RAPIDLY RISING WATER CRASHED INTO HER HOME. >> THE BAD HEROES UP IN THE FLOODWATERS, AND SHE SAID SHE ONLY HAD ABOUT A FOOT AND A HALF TO BREATHE. >> I AM HOMELESS AND SCARED. >> NEWS PLAN TO EVACUATE. BUT WOKE UP EARLY AND FIGURED HE HAD A LITTLE MORE TIME. HE WENT BACK TO SLEEP. >> I WILL, GOT FOND WRESTLE FLOATING ABOUT ON THE WAY FOR MY BOOTH SO I CLIMB TO THE HOUSE AND CLIMBED UP ON THE ROOF, WE SEE THAT FOR FIVE AND A HALF. HOURS >> IT IS NOT JUST BRUCE AND HALLIE WHO LOST THEIR HOMES. >> IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD ALONE, THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF. HOMES YOU CAN SEE FROM HYDRO IN THERE THAT EACH OF THESE TOOK ON AT LEAST 12 FEET OF WATER. THEY ARE ALL TOTAL LOSSES. SO MANY PEOPLE LOSING THEIR HOMES, NOT JUST IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. IF YOU LOOK AT THE TELESTRATOR I HAVE, I CAN DRAW ON HERE, THE WATER CAME FROM RIGHT BACK THERE ALMOST TWO MILES FROM THE DOLL GULF OF MEXICO. >> SINCE 1970, THE FORT MYERS AREA HAS GROWN BY MORE THAN 600%. YOU CAN SEE IT CLEARLY IN THIS GRAPHIC. AND, ON THIS NEXT, ONE THIS WAS THE WARNING FOR STORM SURGE OVER NINE FEET. INUNDATING A LOT OF THAT NEW POPULATION. MASSIVE RESCUE EFFORTS UNDERWAY ACROSS THE COAST. >> THERE ARE BANNED MORE THAN 700 CONFIRMED RESCUES, LIKELY MANY MORE THAN THAT. >> 1000 FEMALE PERSONNEL DEPLOYED, SUPPLYING MILLIONS OF LITERS OF WATER, MEALS, AND HUNDREDS OF GENERATORS. ABOUT 2 MILLION PEOPLE STILL WITHOUT POWER. JUST HEARTBREAKING RUIN AT EVERY TURN. BUT, RESILIENCE AND GRATITUDE ARE RIGHT THERE TO. >> YOU KNOW, THE MEN AND WOMEN ON OUR SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM HAVE THE MOST AMAZING FIRE IN THEIR BELLY. THEY ARE MY HEROES AND WHAT THEY DO IS GO TO WAR. >> IN, ORLANDO HISTORIC FLOODING MORE THAN 12 INCHES OF RAIN. FROM THIS NURSING HOME ALONE, 106 RESIDENTS WERE TAKEN OUT AFTER THE FLOODWATERS TRIED TO GET A, DESPITE THOSE SANDBAGS. OUR JOURNEY NORMAN RIGHT THERE AFTER THE RESCUE. >> EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THI? >> NO, MA'AM, I HAVE. NOT NOT IN CENTRAL. FLORIDA >> IT IS DIFFICULT TO KNOW THAT IAN IS STILL TORTURING PARTS OF THE SOUTHEAST BUT TO GO BACK TO THAT AREA SO HARD HIT WITH THE 900 HOMES IN THE ONE RV PARK WE SPENT TIME IN, FROM WHAT WE CAN TELL THEY'VE NOT YET BEEN CHECKED. MEANING THAT THE BROAD SCOPE OF WHAT NEEDS TO BE SEARCHED AND RESCUES THAT STILL NEED TO HAPPEN IS REALLY KIND OF OVERWHELMING. I REALLY HOPE THAT COULD BE EXPEDITED OR, BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO BE A LONG COUPLE WEEK, MONTHS, AND EVEN YEARS BEFORE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA ESPECIALLY THE COAST IS FEELING ANYTHING LIKE THERE JUST A COUPLE DAYS AGO. ALEXIS. >> GINGER ZEE, THANK YOU FOR THAT REPORT. NOW TO THE DESTRUCTION LEFT BEHIND WITH RESCUE CREWS RACING AGAINST TIME AND FLOODWATERS, STRANDING RESIDENTS. VICTORY ROW CAN-DO IS IN HARD-HIT VENICE, FLORIDA. HI, VICTOR. >> ALEXIS, WE MADE IT FROM FORT MYERS UP TO THAT. IT IS HARDEST HIT AREAS ALONG THE. LAY THIS BECAME ONE OF. THEM THERE'S, HOME IT TOOK THE BRUNT OF HURRICANE IAN. I COULD SEE IT RIGHT THROUGH INSIDE THE. PITCHING WE ON THAT IT IS TOUGH TO MAKE OUT WHAT IS WET HERE. THIS WAS THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE. WE KNOW THAT FOR SURE. STORM SURGE WAS INCREDIBLY POWERFUL. IT CAME UP AND IN AND PUSHED EVERYTHING TO THE BACK. THIS LOOKS LIKE TOOTHPICKS SCATTERED AROUND. YOU CAN RECOUP A POST, A BED FRAME THERE. SO MANY RESIDENTS WHAT WE HAVE HEARD IN THE LAST DAY IN A HALF OF THIS JUST NOT EXPECT THE STORM TO BE THIS. THAT BEGINNING THAT LONG AND PAINFUL CLEANUP PROCESS. MANY OTHERS LIKE THEM WILL BE STARTING ALL OVER. ALEXIS. >> VICTOR ORLANDO, THANK YOU. MEANWHILE, NEARLY 2 MILLION CUSTOMERS ARE WITHOUT POWER. CREWS WORK TO RESTORE POWER AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. FOR MANY OFFICIALS THEY SAY IT COULD LAST A BIT. RON MARSHALL NOW IS IN ST. PETERSBURG WITH THE LATEST. HI, ROB. >> HI, ALEX. GOOD MORNING TO YOU THERE IS -- FOR DUKE ENERGY HERE. UTILITY TRUCK STARTING TO ROLL OUT. THE BUCKET TRUCKS, ALL THOSE, TRUCKS TREE TRUCKS, TRUCKS ARE JUST HERE WITH CREWS TO ASSESS THE DAMAGES. THEN YOU HAVE THESE, VEHICLES SOME OF THE STORMS TREE TRUNKS YOU CAN SEE MANY TREES ARE DOWN AND IMPACTING THE ABILITY TO GET POWER BACK ONLINE. THE ISSUES WE ARE DEALING WITH YESTERDAY, A LOT OF, FLOODING A PULSE, OBVIOUSLY YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE WORKING ELECTRICITY WITHIN WATER. 30 PLUS MILE PER HOUR, WINDS WHICH WE HAD YESTERDAY. THEY CAN'T FLY THESE BUCKETS IN THOSE SORTS OF. WINDS THAT'S WHY THE NUMBERS ARE OVER 2 MILLION, AND THOSE NUMBERS SHOULD COME DOWN. TODAY THEY'RE GONNA GET TO WORK AND MAKE THINGS. HAPPEN YOU HAVE GOT TO REMEMBE, YOU HAVE THE POWER, PLAN YOU HAVE THE HIGH VOLTAGE POWER LINES. AND YOU HAVE THE SUBSTATIONS, LIES IN THE STREET AND LIES IN YOUR. HOUSE THERE ARE LAYERS OF WAYS FOR THE AUTHORITY TO GET TO YOU. AND YOU WANT TO GET FROM TOP TO. BOTTOM AND YOU'D BE WITHOUT POWER, WE HAVE GUYS ON YOUR STREETS. YOU MAY BE WORKING UP THE LINES. A BIG PROJECT FOR DUKE ENERGY, FOR FLORIDA POWER AND LIGHT. THAT'S WHY THEY BROUGHT TENS OF THOUSANDS OF EXTRA CREWS TO COME IN BEFORE THE STORM HITS. HAS HIT. AND I'M A BIG JOB AHEAD OF. THEM HOPEFULLY TO MAKE SOME PROGRESS IN THE DAYS, AND UNFORTUNATELY, FOR, SOME WEEKS, TO COME. OBVIOUSLY THESE HOMES ARE EITHER WAY TOO DAMAGED OR DO NOT EXIST ANYMORE. IF YOU ARE LYING TO YOUR POLE ON YOUR STREET'S DAMAGE. THAT IS WHEN YOU GET A FIX. SO, THESE GUYS WILL GET THE JUICE FLOWING ON YOUR STREET. BUT YOU MAY HAVE TO HIRE ELECTRICIAN TO GET IT TO YOUR HOUSE. AND THAT IS ANOTHER LAYER THAT COULD LEAD TO DELAYS. >> ANOTHER. LARRY MASSIVE UNDERTAKING. THERE MASTRIANO,. THANK YOU ABC NEWS METEOROLOGIST GREG JUICER JOINING ME NOW IS THE LATEST FORECAST. GREG, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE PATH OF THIS STORM? >> TAKING A LOOK AT HURRICANE IAN, OUT THE PATH OF THE EFFECTS HERE ON OF COURSE THE MID-ATLANTIC AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE CENTER OF CIRCULATION, COMING UP A BEAM OF CHARLESTON. 85 MILE PER HOUR, WINDS 105 MILE PER HOUR GUSTS. BUT I WANT TO SHOW YOU WHAT IS GOING ON IN TERMS OF THE ACTUAL REAL LIFE STORM SURGE. CHARLESTON HAS SERVED ABOUT TWO OR THREE FEET, YOU NOTICE THAT ABOVE THEIR NORMAL HIGH TIDE. RECORDS BLUE LINE IS THE NORMALLY RED LINE IS OBSERVED. GETTING BACK TO NORMAL NOW. THEY'VE EVEN SEEN AN ANTI SURG, MUCH LIKE TAMPA BAY DID AS THIS THING MOVES ACROSS AND THE WINDS START TURNING BACK OUT TO SEA. TAKING A LOOK AT CHARLESTON, A BIT FARTHER NORTH. BASICALLY AS FAR NORTH AS YOU CAN GO IN SOUTH CAROLINA. THEY ARE NOT GETTING ABOVE THEIR LINE, IT IS. SOARING MYRTLE BEACH IS GOING TO BE WHERE WE SEE THE WORST OF THE STORM SURGE. AS IT MAKES ITS WAY INLAND. ALEXIS. >> THEY ARE SAYING IT COULD BE AS MUCH AS SEVEN. FEET, GREG THANK YOU. COMING, UP VLADIMIR PUTIN'S ILLEGAL ANNEXING OCCUPIED TERRITORIES AND UKRAINE. A MAJOR RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN ILLEGALLY IN -- A MAJOR ESCALATION IN THE WAR. CHIEF CORRESPONDENT IAN PANNELL HAS THE LATEST FROM UKRAINE. >> THE HORRIFIC RUSSIAN STRIKE, HUMANITARIAN, KILLING 23 PEOPLE. MOST OF THE IMAGES TO GRUESOME TO SHOW PICKING UP FAMILY AND TAKING THEM TO SAFETY. ZAPORIZHZHIA IS ONE OF FOUR REGIONS VLADIMIR PUTIN WILL ILLEGALLY DECLARE PART OF RUSSIA THIS MORNING. THE KREMLIN, HOLDING A CEREMONY IN MOSCOW TO FORMALLY ANNOUNCE THE ANNEXATION OF THE TERRITORIES. WE LANDED APPEARING AFTER STAGE REFERENDUM IN FOR PARTS OF THE COUNTRY, SOME PEOPLE FORCED TO VOTE AT GUNPOINT. STROKING NEW FEARS OF FURTHER ESCALATION IN THE WAR AS RUSSIA WARNS OF AN ATTACK ON THE NEW TERRITORY WOULD BE A DIRECT ATTACK ON RUSSIA. PUTIN EVEN THREATENING THE USE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS TO DEFEND THEIR LAND. MUCH OF THE WAR CONDEMNING RUSSIA'S MOVE. UN SECRETARY GENERAL SAYING THAT THIS HAS NO LEGAL VALUE. >> IT HAS NO PLACE IN THE MODERN WORLD, IT MUST NOT BE ACCEPTED. >> THE U.S., EXPECTED TO IMPOSE SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA IN RESPONSE. >> THE UNITED STATES WILL NEVE, NEVER RECOGNIZE RUSSIA'S CLAIMS ON UKRAINE SOVEREIGN TERRITORY. >> INSIDE RUSSIA, GROWING UNEASE ABOUT THE SUPPORT OF THE WAR. SAYING, RETURN HOME THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN DRAFTED UNREASONABLY. AT THE SAME TIME, MOVING TO STOP THE WAVE OF FIGHTING AGE MEN FROM LEAVING THE COUNTRY BY OPENING UP NEW MILITARY ENLISTMENT OFFICES AND BORDER ENTRY POINTS. >> IAN PANNELL, THANK YOU. NOW, RUSSIA'S ANNEXATION OF OCCUPIED TERRITORY IN UKRAINE IS A KEY MOMENT IN THE WAR WITH MAJOR IMPLICATIONS FOR WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT TOM BURCH JOINING ME LIVE FROM MORE. WHY IS PUTIN DOING THIS NOW, WHAT IS HE HOPING TO ACHIEVE? >> I THINK VLADIMIR PUTIN RIGHT NOW IS DESPERATE, THIS IS A DESPERATE MOVE FROM HIM IN LIGHT OF MAJOR BATTLEFIELD DEFEATS BY THE RUSSIANS THERE AND UKRAINE. I THINK THERE'S A COUPLE THINGS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT ABOUT THIS MOVE. ONE, PUTIN IS NOT ONLY TRYING TO DECLARE THAT SUDDENLY THESE REGIONS OF UKRAINE, WHICH IS FORCES CONTROL FOR PARTS OF RUSSIA, BUT ALSO MORE TERRITORY IN THE EASTERN DONBAS AND IN THE SOUTH. FOR ME, THAT REALLY IS AN ADMISSION OF FAILURE BY THE KREMLIN. THEY'RE EFFECTIVELY SAYING THAT WE ARE GOING TO ANNEX TERRITOR, BUT ACTUALLY WE DON'T CONTROL IT. REMEMBER, PUTIN'S GOAL IN THE SECOND PHASE OF THE WAR ONCE'S FORCES WERE PUSHED BACK WAS TO TAKE THE WHOLE OF THE DONBAS. HE HASN'T MANAGED THAT, AND WHILE HE IS SPEAKING AT A CEREMONY IN MOSCOW, HIS FORCES ARE POTENTIALLY SURROUNDED IN ANOTHER KEY STRATEGIC IMPORTANT CITY IN DONBAS BY THE UKRAINIANS RIGHT NOW. THE UKRAINIANS SAY THEY ARE THREATENING TO SURROUND RUSSIAN TROOPS AND IT COULD BE YET ANOTHER VICTORY FOR THE UKRAINIANS ON THE GROUND. >> WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN FOR THE TRAJECTORY OF THE WAR NOW TOM? >> I THINK IT WON'T DETER THE UKRAINIANS AT ALL. YES, THERE IS THIS BIG POMPOUS CEREMONY IN MOSCOW, WE'VE JUST BEEN LISTENING TO VLADIMIR PUTIN'S SPEECH. THERE IS A LOT OF FACTUAL INACCURACIES ABOUT THE REALITY, ABOUT HISTORICAL CLAIMS OVER UKRAINIAN TERRITORY, THE IDEA THAT PUTIN DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THE UKRAINE AS AN INDEPENDENT NATION. THERE IS A SENSE OF VICTIMHOOD FROM PUTIN THAT WE HAVE SEEN ON MANY OCCASIONS BEFORE. THERE IS A LOT OF RHETORIC AGAINST THE WEST AND PARTICULARLY THE UNITED STATES, CLAIMING THE UNITED STATES IS THE AGGRESSOR IN ALL OF THIS WHEN WE KNOW THAT RUSSIA HAS INVADED UKRAINE. I DON'T THINK THAT THIS MOVE TO ANNEX THE TERRITORY MAKES A REAL DIFFERENCE ON THE GROUND. I DON'T THINK IT WILL DETER POLICY MAKERS IN WASHINGTON, IN BRUSSELS, IN LONDON, IN ANY DRAMATIC WAY. THEY WILL TAKE IT INTO ACCOUNT TO SOME EXTENT. BUT THAT IS BECAUSE PUTIN IS TRYING TO SAY TO THE WEST, NOW THAT THOSE TERRITORIES AREN'T OUR VIEW PART OF RUSSIA, ANY ATTACK ON THOSE TERRITORIES IS CONSIDERED TO BE AN ATTACK ON RUSSIA. HE IS RAMPING UP THE RHETORIC IN ANY WAY HE CAN. I THINK HE IS DOING SO, ONCE AGAIN, BECAUSE HE IS IN A WEAKEN POSITION. I THINK THE MAIN AUDIENCE OF THE SPEECH TODAY AND THIS MASSIVE CEREMONY TO DECLARE THIS ANNEXATION IS THE RUSSIAN PUBLIC. HE'S FACING INCREASING LEVELS OF DISSENT IN RUSSIA RIGHT NOW AND HE IS TRYING TO SAY TO HIS PEOPLE, I AM MORE POWERFUL, LOOK WHAT I CAN DO. >> TOM SOUFI BURRIDGE, THANK YOU FOR THE EXCELLENT REPORTING LIVE IN KYIV. >> WELCOME BACK TO ABC NEWS LIVE. GINNI THOMAS, A CONSERVATIVE ACTIVISTS -- SHE TESTIFIED BEFORE THE HOUSE OF JANUARY SIX COMMITTEE YESTERDAY AND ANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT HER ROLE TO OVERTURN THE 2020 ELECTION. CHIEF WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT JONATHAN CARL HAS MORE. HI JOHN. >> GOOD MORNING, ALEXIS. GINNI THOMAS WAS AGGRESSIVELY PUSHING EFFORTS TO CHALLENGE THE ELECTION AT THE VERY TIME THAT DONALD TRUMP WAS RALLYING TO GO TO THE SUPREME COURT TO OVERTURN JOE BIDEN'S ELECTION VICTORY. IN ONE OF MANY TEXT MESSAGES THAT HE SENT AFTER THE ELECTION TO THEN WHITE HOUSE CHIEF OF STAFF MARK MEADOWS, THOMAS CALLED THE 2020 ELECTION THE GREATEST HEIST IN OUR HISTORY. SHE TESTIFIED FOR SOME HOURS BETWEEN THE COMMITTEE AND MAKE CLEAR THAT SHE STILL BELIEVES THE THOROUGHLY DISPROVEN ALLEGATION THAT THE ELECTION WAS STOLEN. SHE DOWNPLAYED HER EFFORTS TO OVERTURN THE RESULTS, SHE SAID THAT SHE NEVER TALKED ABOUT WHAT SHE WAS DOING WITH HER HUSBAND, THE SUPREME COURT JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS. SHE MADE AN OPENING STATEMENT THAT IS MAINTAINED BY ABC NEWS WHERE SHE SAID IN PART, IT IS LAUGHABLE FOR ANYONE WHO KNOWS MY HUSBAND TO THINK THAT I COULD INFLUENCE HIS JURISPRUDENCE. THE MAN IS INDEPENDENT AND STUBBORN WITH STRONG CHARACTER TRAITS, INDEPENDENTS AND INTEGRITY. >> JONATHAN CARL, THANK YOU. THIS MORNING, WE ARE CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF THE AIR FORCE. CHIEF NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT MATT GUTMAN HAD A SMALL TASTE OF WHAT THE AIRMEN'S ELITE PILOTS DO EVERY DAY. >> THE AIR FORCE CALL -- FOR THE PASSENGER, THOSE UPSIDE DOWN TURNS ARE PURE EXHILARATION. IN HONOR OF THE AIR FORCE'S 75TH ANNIVERSARY, IT IS TOURING ACES, THEY INVITED US TO THEIR OFFICE FOR THE DAY. THIS WEEKEND, THEY ARE FLYING OVER THE PACIFIC AIRSHOW ATTEND BY MILLIONS. BEFORE YOU HAVE TO FLY, IF THE WALK. FIRST, THE SUIT. SAFETY EQUIPMENT -- >> NEEDS THAT PORTION CONNECTE, YOU WILL USE THE GOPRO ITSELF. >> AND THEN THERE IS INSTRUCTION FROM THE THUNDERBIRDS FLIGHT CREW. >> YOU ARE GOING TO FLY IN AN F 16 TODAY. SO, THE WAY TODAY IS GOING TO GO. >> WHAT DOES NINE JEEZ MEAN? >> 90S IS NINE TIMES THE FORCE OF GRAVITY. WHAT YOU FEEL RIGHT NOW IS ONE G, WE ARE GOING TO GO TO NINE TIMES THAT. >> THEN THE FLIGHT MISSION PLAN WITH MY PILOT. FINALLY, THE WALK TO THE F-16, THE TRADITIONAL SALUTES, HIGH FIVES, THEN I CLIMB IN THE TAXI TO TAKE OFF. TESTING THOSE G FORCES, BRING ME INSIDE THE COCKPIT. THEN PUTTING US DOWN. IT'S PRETTY SPECIAL TO SEE THE WORLD FROM A PERSPECTIVE THAT NOW LOT OF PEOPLE GET TO SEE. IT MAKES YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE PART OF A BIGGER CIVILIZATION, A BIGGER SOCIETY. BUT ALSO NOT TO TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER, IT IS FANTASTIC. >> FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF HIS PASSENGER, YOU DEFINITELY DO NOT TAKE IT FOR GRANTED. MEANWHILE, THE THUNDERBIRDS ARE TRYING TO RECRUIT FOR THE AIR FORCE, THEY SAY THAT IS NOT THEIR MAIN MISSION. >> IT IS THERE TO GET AFTER THE INSPIRATION, IT IS DIVIDED TIMES, TO CREATE A BEACON IN THE NAME OF SERVICE FOR SOMETHING BIGGER THAN OURSELVES. >> ONE OF THESE MACHINES GIVES YOU DEPRECIATION FOR THE PRECISION OF THE PILOTS AND THE THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF TRAINING THAT GOES INTO THIS. ALSO, THE TEAMWORK OF THE CREW. I'M NOT GOING TO LIE, IT IS ALSO INCREDIBLE SITTING IN THE BACKSEAT, GIGGLING CHILD HAVE THE TIME. PULLING 90S? THAT IS NOT SUPER PLEASANT, IT FEELS LIKE YOU ARE BEING CRUSHED IN A GIANT FIST. THANKFULLY, I KNOW YOU MAY BE WONDERING, I DID NOT HAVE TO USE THE ESSEX BAG WHICH EVERYONE WARNED ME ABOUT. I WAS GRATEFUL FOR THAT. >> WE ARE PROUD OF YOU, MATT GUTMAN, IT LOOKS LIKE A NATURAL OUT THERE. WE ARE OF COURSE MONITORING THE LATEST PATH OF HURRICANE IAN AS IT AIMS FOR SOUTH CAROLINA NOW. ABC NEWS METEOROLOGIST GREG DTRA JOINING ME WITH THE VERY LATEST. GREG, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US? >> WE ARE WATCHING THIS AS IT DRAWS CLOSER TO THE SHORELINE, CHARLESTON NOT GETTING INTO SOME HEAVY RAINFALL. HIGH STORM SURGE LOOKING LIKE IT IS A NORTHERN SOUTH CAROLINA AND INTO NORTH CAROLINA. RIGHT NOW, IT IS STILL A CATEGORY ONE, HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR. LET'S LOOK AT THE RADAR HERE, REAL TIGHT BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME THE HEAVIER RAIN BANDS MOVING ACROSS CHARLESTON, IN A VERY FLASH FLOOD PRONE CITY. WHILE YOU'RE NOT GETTING THE WORST OF THE STORM SEARCH, YOU ARE STILL GOING TO GET SOME VERY HEAVY RAIN FROM THAT AS IT TRACKS ITS WAY INLAND. I THINK WE MAINTAIN RIGHT NOW THE CURRENT INTENSITY, I DON'T THINK IT GOES UP ANYMORE, BUT STILL 85 MILES PER HOUR MAKING ITS WAY INLAND, I THINK SOME OF THOSE GUSTS WILL BE REALIZED NORTH OF CHARLESTON. THE FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS, LOOK HOW FAR INLAND, ALL THE WAY TO THE SPINE OF THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS IS WHERE THAT EXTENDS. THIS IS WHERE WE HAVE THE FLOOD WATCH AND THE DANGER FROM SOAKING RAIN FALLS. EVERY TIME YOU GET INTO THIS RED CONTOUR, YOU ARE UP AND OVER FIVE INCHES OF RAIN, POSSIBLY ALL THE WAY UP TO A FOOT OF RAIN. LOOK HOW FAR THIS EXTENDS INTO THE CITY BY THE WEEKEND. POSSIBLY IN NEW YORK CITY, LUNCHTIME ON SATURDAY, IT WILL BE RAINING REALLY HARD. THAT WILL GO ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE CAPE MASSACHUSETTS. >> WHAT ABOUT THE STORM SURGE, WHAT ARE YOU HEARING THERE IN TERMS OF WHAT THAT IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE ONCE IT MAKES LANDFALL IN SOUTH CAROLINA? >> GREAT QUESTION. I THINK CHARLESTON IS GETTING THE WORST OF IT, IT IS ALREADY SEEN THE WORST OF IT. NOW MYRTLE BEACH AND AREAS NORTH. AGAIN, CHARLESTON IS ON THE SOUTHERN EDGE, I REALLY THINK THAT MYRTLE BEACH AND UP INTO NORTHERN PORTIONS OF NORTH CAROLINA IS WHERE WE SEE SOME OF THE HIGHEST SURGE, EVEN ALL THE WAY UP TO THE OUTER BANKS. WE COULD POSSIBLY SEE 2 TO 4 FEET OF STORM SURGE, WHAT I'M SEEING FROM THE SENSORS IS THAT CHARLES MAY ALREADY SEEM WORST. BUT AGAIN, MYRTLE BEACH RUNNING ABOUT TWO FEET ABOVE WHERE IT'S NORMAL IS. WE COULD POSSIBLY SEE 4 TO 7 FEET AND ABOVE. WE'LL BE TRACKING THAT RAINFALL FROM THE HURRICANE UP INTO THE NORTH PART, WE ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE TORNADO THREAT. THIS IS ON THE NORTHERN SIDE. CHARLESTON IS GIVING OUT OF THE NORTH OF IT, BUT NORTH CAROLINA ALL THE WAY UP TO VIRGINIA, EVEN EXTENDING INTO THE SOUTHERN PORTIONS OF THIS AREA. >> WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT WHEN IT GOES OUT TO SEA, IF THE WATER IS WARM, WHICH IT HAS BEEN, IT CAN STIR THINGS UP AND MAKE IT STRONGER WHEN IT COMES BACK INLAND. WE'RE LOOKING AT A CATEGORY ONE RIGHT NOW, IS THERE ANY INDICATION THAT COULD MOVE TO A CATEGORY TWO OR THREE AS IT CONTINUES TO MOVE UP THE COAST? >> IT LOOKS LIKE IT MAY GAIN A LITTLE BIT MORE INTENSITY AS IT MOVES FARTHER TO THE NORTH. TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, ON THE SATELLITE PRESENTATION IT HAS TAKEN A BIT OF A BEATING FROM FLORIDA. EXACTLY TO YOUR POINT, IT MOVES OFF THE COAST OF FLORIDA LATE LAST NIGHT, EARLY TO THIS MORNING, WE DEFINITELY SAW THAT INTENSIFICATION TOOK PLACE. WE SAW A STRONGER TROPICAL STORM AS IT MOVED OFF THE COAS, STRENGTHENING BACK INTO HURRICANE. WE HAD -- IT DOES MAKE ITS WAY BACK IN. NOW, IT IS GETTING OFF OF THE WARMEST WATERS OF THE GULF OF MEXICO. STILL OVER 80-DEGREE WATER, I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF THE HURRICANE HUNTERS GO OUT AND HAVE TO TACK ON A FEW MORE MILES PER HOUR. THANKFULLY, THIS IS NOT THE HURRICANE, IT MADE ITS WAY INLAND OFF THE CAPE OF FLORIDA. I SHOULD SAY, AROUND CAPE CORAL AND SANIBEL ISLAND. THERE IS STILL THE TORNADO THREAT, THE FLASH FLOODING THREAT, AND OF COURSE THAT STORM SURGE, BACK TO YOU. >> GREG, THANK YOU. I'M ALEXIS CHRISTY OFFERS, DO STAY WITH US, ABC NEWS LIVE CONTINUES WITH MORE NEWS, CONTEXT, AND ANALYSIS.
