MAKES A, RIGHT LOCKS IN OTHER 20 FEET. TURNS LEFT, INTO A SCHOOL ROOM. INTO A CLASSROOM. THAT HAS DOORS OPEN IN THE MIDDLE. >> TEN YEAR OLD GEMMA LOPEZ WAS IN THE CLASSROOM DOWN THE HALL. >> WHEN DID YOU NOTICE THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG? >> WELL WHENEVER THE BULLET CAME THROUGH THE WALL. SO I TURN BUT IT CAME OUT UNDER THE TABLE. >> AND HAD YOU PRACTICED LOCKDOWN? GILES >> YES, SINCE KINDERGARTEN DIDN'T OR PRE-K. >> BUT THIS TIME THERE WAS NO LOCKDOWN? >> NO. I HEARD OFFICERS YELLING AT THE SHOOTER. >> WHAT DID YOU HEAR THEM YELLING? >> TO PUT THE FIREARM DOWN. AND THEN, THE SHOOTER SAID, LEAVE ME ALONE PLEASE. AND THEN HE STARTED SHOOTING. >> JENNA'S BEST FRIEND, MARY GARCIA, KILLED. >> AUTHORITIES SAY FOUR MINUTES AFTER THE SHOOTER ENTERED THE BUILDING LAW ENFORCEMENT WAS INSIDE THE TRUCK FIRE. THEY WERE TREATED AND CALLED FOR ADDITIONAL RESOURCES. STARTING TO FILL IN THE COMMOTION WAS JESSE ORTIZ, WHO LIVES ACROSS THE. STREET HIS VIDEOS EXCLUSIVE TO ABC NEWS, SHOWS OFFICERS TAKING COVER BEHIND A VEHICLE. >> DID YOU TELL THEM TO GO? AND >> I WAS YELLING LIKE, WHY DON'T YOU GUYS GO IN? WHY DON'T YOU KNOW? IN >> THE VIDEO THEN SHOWS A TEAM GOING IN, BUT THEY HELD OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM. POLICE SAY TO FOCUS ON EVACUATING OTHER CHILDREN FROM THE SCHOOL. >> APPROXIMATELY AN HOUR LATER, U.S. BORDER PATROL, TACTICAL TEAMS ARRIVE, THEY MAKE ENTRY. SHOOT AND KILL THE SUSPECT. >> AS ARCHIE IS KEPT FILMING, THE CHAOS WAS UNFOLDING IN THE STREET. >> PARENTS CLASSIC WITH POLICE, WITH ENRAGED TO SEE SO MANY OFFICERS STANDING OUTSIDE WHILE THEIR CHILDREN WERE TRAPPED EE ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT, NINE, TEN COPS DOING NOTHING. >> DIANE, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT RECENTLY DOUBLING ITS FUNDING FOR SECURITY. IT ADDED EXTRA OFFICERS. NOW REMEMBER, THEY GET DRILLED FOR JUST SUCH AN INCIDENT A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. BUT INVESTIGATORS TELL ME THE MOST BASIC MEASURES MEANT TO SLOW DOWN AND ATTACKER, WERE NOT IMPLEMENTED. THINGS LIKE CALLING IT THE LOCKDOWN EARLY, AND JUST KEEPING THE OUTSIDE DOORS OF THE BUILDING LOCKED. AND RAISES QUESTIONS WHETHER ANY SUCH MEASURES WERE CAN ACTUALLY STOP A LONE WOLF ATTACK, OR ARMED WITH AN AR STYLE RIFLE, WHO IS WILLING TO DIE FROM ENTERING A BUILDING LIKE. THAT DIANE. >> ALL RIGHT, MATT GUTMAN, THANKS FOR. THAT AND I WANNA GO BACK TO PHILIP OFF IN UVALDE FOR MORE. PHIL, HOW ARE OFFICIALS EXPLAINING WHY OFFICERS WERE OUTSIDE THE BUILDING FOR ALMOST AN HOUR, KNOWING THAT AGAIN WAS INSIDE WITH THESE KIDS? >> WELL, IN THE LATEST NEWS CONFERENCE THAT WE SAW YESTERDAY, THEY SAID THAT TWO OFFICERS TOOK FIRE FROM THIS GUNMAN AFTER HE SPENT 12 MINUTES SHOOTING OUTSIDE AT THE SCHOOL. THEY TOOK FIRE FROM HIM, THEY BACKED OFF AND CALLED FOR BODY ARMOR AND CALLED FOR SQUAD TEAMS AND CALLED FOR NEGOTIATORS AS THE SHOOTER WENT INTO THE SCHOOL, TURNED DOWN A COUPLE DIFFERENT HALL WAYS, AND WOUND UP IN THOSE ADJOINING CLASSROOMS AS HE DID BUT HE DIDN'T SHOT AND KILLED 21 PEOPLE. SO, THEY ARE EXPLAINING THAT THEY NEEDED HELP, AND THEY CALLED FOR HELP. WHAT THEY HAVEN'T REALLY GOTTEN INTO YOU, AND WHEN ALL OF US HERE AT THE MEDIA ASKS DESPERATELY YESTERDAY BUT DID REALLY GET AN ANSWER TO, IS WIDEN THOSE OFFICERS WHO TOOK FIRE GO INTO THAT SCHOOL IMMEDIATELY. BECAUSE THAT HAS REALLY BEEN THE PROTOCOL SINCE COLUMBINE 23 YEARS AGO. >> AND HOW ARE THEY EXPLAINING HOW MUCH THIS STORY HAS CHANGED, PHIL? NOT ONLY ABOUT THE TIMING THAT YOU DESCRIBED, BUT ALSO ABOUT THE UNLOCKED TOUR AND THE SCHOOL SAFETY OR OFFICER WHO INITIALLY SAID TRIED TO STOP THE SHOOTER, BUT ACTUALLY WAS THERE? WELL >>, DIANE, YOU ARE RIGHT. THAT IS SOMETHING GOVERNOR OF IT IS REALLY GOING TO HAVE TO ANSWER TO. BECAUSE HE IS THE ONE WHO IN THE BEGINNING GAVE THOSE DETAILS. HE SAID VERY CLEARLY THAT AN OFFICER IN THE PARKING LOT, AND YESTERDAY THE FOLKS WERE GIVING US THE NEWS CONFERENCE IN TAKING CARE OF THIS CASTIGATION, SAID ABSOLUTELY. NOT THAT THERE WAS NO RESEARCH OFFICER IN THAT PARKING LOT, AND THE DOOR THAT HE ENTERED WAS UNLOCKED AFTER HE SPENT 12 MINUTES SHOOTING AT THE SCHOOL FROM THE OUTSIDE, THEN HOPPED OVER A FENCE, THEN WALKED THROUGH AN UNLOCKED DOOR. THERE ARE NOT A LOT OF DETAILS HERE THAT ARE VERY DISTURBING. NOT ONLY TO THE COUNTRY WATCHING THIS, EVERYBODY HAS A CHILD INTO SCHOOL, BUT ESPECIALLY TO THIS COMMUNITY THAT HAS JUST LOST 21 PEOPLE. 19 OF THEM CHILDREN, DIANE. >> UNIMAGINABLE. AND, PHIL MORE THAN A DOZEN PEOPLE TOLD NBC NEWS THAT THE SHOOTER SENT THEM DISTURBING MESSAGES ACROSS MULTIPLE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS IN THE DAYS LEADING UP TO THE MASSACRE. ONCE WE KNOW THAT THIS MESSAGE IS? NOW >> WELL, WE FIRST THOUGHT THAT IT WAS JUST THE MORNING OF. JUST THAT HE HAD SENT THESE THREE CHECKS THE WARNING OF. AND THOSE THREE TAX WENT TO ONE PERSON, AND THE FIRST ONE WAS I AM GOING TO SHOOT MY GRANDMOTHER, THE SECOND ONE WAS I SHOT MY GRANDMOTHER, AND THE THIRD ONE WAS I AM GOING TO SHOOT AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. THAT WAS AND I THINK THE 30 MINUTES BEFORE THE SHOOTER GOT TO THE SCHOOL. BUT IN THE WEEKS AND MONTHS LEADING UP TO THE SHOOTING, HE DID SEND US POLICE ARE TELLING, US IT'S A VERY CONCERNING MESSAGES. WHAT IS A PICTURE OF A GUN ON THE FLOOR. OTHERS TO A YOUNG WOMAN HE MET ONLINE IN GERMANY. SO THEY WERE RED FLAGS EVERYWHERE IN THE WEEKS AND MONTHS LEADING UP TO THIS SHOOTING. >> AND IN A STRANGE COINCIDENCE, WE ARE ALSO LEARNING THAT THE SHOOTER'S MOTHER ACTUALLY WORKED AT THE SAME BUSINESS WHERE HE BOUGHT THESE GUNS. WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THAT? WILL >> THEY, AND WE HAVE DONE SOME INVESTIGATING INTO THIS, AND PEOPLE IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY WHO DON'T HAVE STORIES LIKE THIS MIGHT FIND IT ODD. BUT HERE IN TEXAS IT IS NOT. IT IS A PART GUN STORE AND PART RESTAURANT. IT IS ONE STORY TOGETHER. AND WHAT WE KNOW IS, HIS MOTHER AT ONE POINT, I'M NOT SURE EXACTLY WHEN WORKS AT THE STORE, NOT IN THE GUN PORTION OF IT BUT OVER ON THE RESTAURANT SIDE OF HIM. AND WE DON'T KNOW SHE HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH HIM GETTING THESE WEAPONS. IT IS JUST SORT OF A STRANGE CAREER COINCIDENCE. BUT I CAN TELL YOU FROM BEING HERE FOR A FEW DAYS NOW, IT IS A SMALL TOWN. AND NOT A TON OF BUSINESSES HERE. >> SO, PHIL AND NOW THAT WE ARE GETTING SOME MORE DETAILS AND MORE CLARIFICATION ON HOW THIS ALL HAPPENED, WHERE DOES INVESTIGATION FOCUS ON NOW? >> I THINK THE INVESTIGATION IS GOING TO FOCUS ON WHAT THE PEOPLE IN THIS COMMUNITY ARE FOCUSING ON. COULD IT HAVE BEEN STOPPED? AND THAT IS A REALLY BIG, IT IS A LOADED QUESTION. IT IS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION, BUT IT IS A QUESTION THAT NEEDS TO BE LAID OUT. NEED ALL THE FACTS. YESTERDAY LONG FORSMAN WAS SAYING WE HAVE VIDEO OF THE SHOOTER OUTSIDE, AND INSIDE THE BUILDING WE ARE GOING FOR IT BY FRAME TO SEE EXACTLY HOW THIS HAPPENED. WE ARE OBVIOUSLY IN A LOOK AT THE ACTIONS OF THE OFFICERS. WHY THOSE OFFICERS WHO TOOK FIRE DIDN'T GO RIGHT BACK IN, WHY THEY TOOK COVER. THAT IS GOING TO BE WHERE THE INVESTIGATION FOCUSES. THAT IS THE QUESTION EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW, DIANE. I WILL SAY THAT WE ARE ALSO LEARNING SOME DETAILS ABOUT THE CHILDREN, AND THE TEACHERS, WHO LOST THEIR LIVES. AND UNFORTUNATELY, AND THIS IS REALLY HARD TO REPORT BY, UNFORTUNATELY THE TRAGEDIES JUST KEEP COMING. THIS WAS ALMOST HARD TO HEAR, IT IS HARD TO HEAR. IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE. THE HUSBAND OF ONE OF THE TEACHERS WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED HERE ON TUESDAY, DIED FROM A HEART ATTACK YESTERDAY. 48 HOURS AFTER HIS WIFE WAS MURDERED, LEAVING BEHIND FOUR CHILDREN. ABC'S MARIA REVEAL HIS IS HERE IN UVALDE AND AS WE CAN WITH THE FAMILIES WHO EVEN THROUGH THEIR GRIEF WANT TO SHARE STORIES OF THOSE THEY HAVE LOST. >> WHEN HE WON IN THE CLASSROOM, HE SAID YOU ARE ALL GOING TO DIE. HE JUST SAID YOU SHOULDN'T. >> A CHILLING ACCOUNT FOR THE FIRST TIME OF WHAT WENT ON INSIDE THAT CLASSROOM. WE ARE MULTIPLE CHILDREN, INTO TEACHERS WERE FATALLY SHOT. >> I WAS PLAYING DEAD, EMOTIONALLY. >> TEN YEAR OLD SON WHILE SALINAS, ONE OF THE FEW SURVIVORS WITH CLASS, NOW RECOVERY AFTER AN INJURY TO HIS LEG. >> HE SHOT MY, TEACHER AND THEN HE SHOT THE. KIDS I THINK HE WAS AIMING AT ME, LIKE THE THING, AND THEN HE LIKE, I GUESS ONE OF THE CHAIRS WHERE THERE SO IT BLOCKED IT AND THE PIECES WHEN IN MY LEG. >> MOST OF HIS FRIENDS AND CLASSMATES, NOT MAKING IT OUT ALIVE. >> I KIND OF DON'T FEEL SAFE GOING TO SCHOOL AND I FEEL HURT AND SOMETIMES THAT NIGHT I HAVE NIGHTMARES TOO. >> ALSO INSIDE THAT CLASSROOM, TEN YEAR OLD TEST MODEL. >> TEST ADORED HER BIG SISTER FAITH, LOVED MAKING TIKTOK. AND KEPT PEOPLE LAUGHING. >> SHE PUT A SMILE ON EVERYBODY 'S FACE, EVERY TIME SHE WAS DANCING. SHE ALWAYS HAD THE BIGGEST SMILE EVER. >> IF YOU HEAD TO THE SUN RODEO IS ALSO ONE OF THE VICTIMS. >> I LAST PIECE OF MY HEART. >> THE MOTHER FOR CENTRAL HELIO WAS LOVING, HAPPY, AND LIKED TO HELP. OTHERS >> I THINK ABOUT, HIM WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY, AND WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THAT CLASSROOM. THAT HE WAS IN. HE WAS CRYING OUT FOR ME OR SOMETHING. I'M JUST, LIKE WHAT WAS HIS LAST WHEN HE SAW LAST. >> AND ALI GARCIA, SHE WAS KNOWN TO LOVE AND COUNT OH AND HER ABSOLUTELY, THE NOW-DELETED THOUGH WHO SAID EVERY TIME SHE SAW HER GRANDDAUGHTER, SHE WOULD RUN TO HER AND GIVE HER DOGS. >> SHE WOULD, SAY A GRANDMA I LOVE. YOU >> AND ALSO BEING REMEMBERED, NO VIA GRAVEL AND ALEXANDER RUBIO OR LEXI WASN'T ALL A HONOR STUDENT. HER MOTHER, CALLING HER BEAUTIFUL AND SMART. SHARING AND FACEBOOK WE TOLD HER WE LEFT HER AND WOULD PICK HER UP AFTER SCHOOL. WE HAD NO IDEA THIS WAS GOODBYE. UNIMAGINABLE TRAGEDY COMPOUNDED JUST IS AFTER TEACHER GARCIA WAS GUNNED DOWN, HER HUSBAND JOE GARCIA DYING OF A HEART ATTACK. THE TWO WERE ABOUT TO CELEBRATE THEIR 25TH AND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. ONE OF HIS FINAL MOMENTS, LAYING FLOWERS AT THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE'S MEMORIAL. THEY NOW LEAVE BEHIND FOUR CHILDREN, SEEN HERE AT A MASS FOR THE FAMILY HELD IN THE PASTORS EMBRACE. >> SEVERAL OF THE VICTIMS ARE STILL RECOVERING HERE IN SAN ANTONIO. ONE FAMILY TELLING ME AS THEIR SON GRADUALLY STARTS TO TALK ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED, IT IS DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO SHARE. BUT AS A PARENT, IT IS EXCRUCIATING TO LISTEN TO WHAT THEIR CHILD WENT THROUGH ON THAT AWFUL DAY. DIANE. >> I'M SURE, IS MARIA VERITY, OUR THANK. I'M ACTUALLY INTERESTED AND WHAT WE CAN DO, TO MAKE THE TERRIBLE EVENTS THAT OCCURRED IN UVALDE LESS LIKELY IN THE FUTURE. >> CORINN RETURNING TO WASHINGTON, JUST BACK FROM THE TRAGEDY IN UVALDE, SO YOU WITH DEMOCRATIC SENATOR CHRIS MURPHY. HIS HOME STATE OF CONNECTICUT ROCKED BY THE SANDY HOOK MASSACRE. >> WE HAVE A NUMBER OF AREAS THAT WE THOUGHT WE MAKE PROGRESS ON, BACKGROUND CHECKS, RED FLAG LAWS, ADDITIONAL SUPPORT. >> THOSE ISSUES BACKED BY THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS, NEARLY 90% SUPPORT BACKGROUND CHECKS.
