HE WAS ACCUSED OF ILLEGALLY LOBBYING ON BEHALF OF THE UAE. SUPREME COURT CHART JUSTICE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON HAS NOW BEEN TREATED WITH THE TRADITIONAL INVESTITURE CEREMONY INSIDE OF THE U.S. SUPREME COURT. WE ARE LOOKING AT PHOTOS OF THE FIRST BLACK WOMAN JUSTICE ON THE SUPREME COURT AFTER THE EVENTS EARLIER TODAY. AFTER THE CEREMONY SHE WAS SURROUNDED BY HER PEERS JUSTICES FRIENDS AND FAMILY. ON MONDAY THE COURT WILL GET BACK IN ACTION TAKING ON A FRESH LIST OF MAJOR CASES EVEN THIS CONTROVERSY CONTINUES AROUND THAT ABORTION RULING FROM LAST TERM. YOU SEE THIS FOLKS RIGHT? THERE THEY ARE JOINING ME NOW TO DISCUSS. ABC NEWS SENIOR WASHINGTON REPORTER DEVIN DWYER. GREAT TO SEE. YOU ARE SOMEBODY WHO KNOWS JUDGE JACKSON PERSONALLY, DOES THE FIRST BLACK WOMEN JUSTICE ON THE OHIO SUPREME COURT. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO BOTH OF YOU FOR BEING HERE. DEVIN, I WANT TO START WITH. YOU JUSTICE JACKSON HAS ALREADY BEEN SWORN IN IT IS CURRENTLY PARTICIPATING IN CASES. TODAY IS PURELY A CEREMONIAL TRADITION, RIGHT? GIVE US AN IDEA OF WHAT TOOK PLACE INSIDE OF THE HISTORIC COURTROOM. >> THERE WERE NO CAMERAS INSIDE THAT COURTROOM, STEPHANIE. SO IT WAS A SPECIAL TREE TO BE ABLE TO WITNESS THE HISTORY. IT IS A RIGHT OF PASSAGE FOR EVERY JUSTICE TO TAKE THEIR SEAT ON THE BENCH AND TODAY WAS ESPECIALLY POIGNANT GIVEN THE HISTORY THAT YOU TALKED ABOUT OF THE MOMENT. THEN YOU SEE JACKSON IMMERSING AFTER THE CEREMONY LASTED JUST ABOUT TEN MINUTES. BUT IT WAS A PACKED COURTROOM WITH DIGNITARIES, THE PRESIDENTS CASE WAS THERE AND THE VICE PRESIDENT AND THEIR SPOUSES RETIRED JUSTICES KENNEDY AND BREYER WERE THERE AS WELL. EVEN GINNI THOMAS THE WIFE OF CLARENCE THOMAS WAS SEEN IN THE ROOM, SPEAKER PELOSI AND FORMER HOUSE SPEAKER PAUL RYAN. WHO YOU MAY NOT KNOW IS RELATED BY MARRIAGE TO KETANJI BROWN JACKSON. HUGE CROWD OF SUPPORTERS AND FANS PACKED THAT ROOM FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER TWO AND A HALF YEARS. SINCE COVID. AND THERE SHE. IS JUSTICE JACKSON OUT WEARING THAT BLACK COKE CLOAK, THAT ROBE, FOR THE FIRST-TIME. TAKING THAT SEAT AT THE END OF THE BENCH. AS YOU HEAR JUSTICES DO. AND, THEN THAT CEREMONIAL IMAGE. WALKING OUT WITH THE CHIEF JUSTICE. SOMETHING THAT EVERY NEW JUSTICE DOES. WALK DOWN THOSE MARBLE STEPS IN FRONT OF CAMERAS. I'LL TELL YOU. SOMETHING I ASKED HER A QUESTION, HOW DOES IT FEEL? AND SHE DIDN'T ANSWER. ME LIKE A GUY JUDGE SHE SIMPLY LOOKED MY WAY I DID NOT TAKE THE REPORTER'S QUESTION. BUT CLEARLY SHE WAS THINKING OF THE HISTORY OF THIS MOMENT. >> DEVIN, GOOD JOB TRYING. I KNEW YOU WOULD. TRYING TO GET A QUESTION OUT THERE. SHORT CEREMONY BUT SWEET I AM, SURE, FOR HER AND YOUR PEERS IN HER FAMILY AS WELL. JUDGE BROWN I WANT TO ASK ABOUT TODAY'S CEREMONY, JUSTICE JACKSON SAT IN THE SAME CHER USED BY CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN MARSHALL WHO WAS APPOINTED IN 1801. WHEN THE COURT WAS ONLY COMPRISED OF 18 MAN. . WHITE MEN. WHAT DO YOU SAY OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS MOMENT FOR JUDGE JACKSON? >> LET ME FIRST OF, SAY ONE, I DO NOT KNOW THE JUSTICE PERSONALLY. I ONLY KNOW HER THROUGH HER WRITINGS AND OF COURSE I AM A FAN FROM AFAR. I DO KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE ON THE SUPREME COURT AND I THINK THAT AS SHE SITS IN THAT SEAT SHE IS REALLY THINKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, JUSTICE MARSHALL. HE WAS JUST SUCH AN ICONIC JUSTICE AND I THINK SHE IS FEELING THE WEIGHT OF HISTORY. BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT SHE IS WELL PREPARED FOR THIS MOMENT. SO WHILE SHE IS SOAKING IN THE HISTORIC NATURE OF THIS MOMENT SHE KNOWS THERE IS A LOT OF TOUGH WORK AHEAD. AND I SUSPECT SHE IS ALREADY STARTED REPEATING BRIEFS IN PREPARATION FOR THE OPENING SESSION. SO I'M SURE SHE FEELS THE WEIGHT OF HISTORY. AND REALLY FEELS IT IN A WAY THAT IT IS HARD TO DESCRIBE, AND THEN SHE SAT IN THAT SEAT AND FELT EVERYBODY'S HOPES AND DREAMS JUST FOCUS ON YOU ARE SEEING THAT REALITY COME TO PASS. >> A SIGNIFICANT, MOMENT INDEED. I THINK IT WAS WISHFUL THINKING ON OUR PART THAT YOU MENTION. THIS IS A PERSONAL OF ME. >> THAT WE? ALL WE ALL WANT TO BE FRIENDS WITH, HER RIGHT? >> ANOTHER QUESTION FOR YOU JUDGE, BROWN JUSTICE CURRENTLY ON THE. BENCH SIX JUSTICES NOMINATED BY REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTS AND ONLY THREE WERE NOMINATED BY DEMOCRATS. JUSTICES, OF COURSE, ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES. BUT THE CREDIBILITY OF THE COURT HAS BEEN CALLED INTO QUESTION RECENTLY AFTER THE LEAKED DRAFT OPINION ON ROE V. WADE. AND SUPREME COURT JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS'S LIFE. HER TEXT MESSAGES REVEALING THAT SHE WAS IN COMMUNICATION WITH TRUMP STAFFERS AND ELECTION OFFICIALS ABOUT OVERTURNING THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. NOW, WHAT IMPACT, JUDGE, DO YOU THINK SHE WILL HAVE ON THIS COURT AND ITS CREDIBILITY? >> YEAH, IT IS HARD TO KNOW. BUT I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR THE JUSTICE, THE NEW JUSTICE. AND FOR CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS. I THINK HE IS GOING TO WORK REALLY HARD TO SUSTAIN COLLEGIALITY AMONGST ALL THE JUSTICES. I THINK WHAT THE PUBLIC DOES NOT REALIZES THAT EXCEPT FOR THE FEW HOT BUTTON ISSUES, THE JUSTICES WILL WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH EACH OTHER. THEY WILL SOCIALIZE TOGETHER. AND FOR THE MOST PART, I THINK THEY WILL BE COLLEGIAL WITH EACH OTHER. FOR JUSTICE BROWN JACKSON, WHAT SHE IS FACING IS THAT THE EYES OF THE NATION WILL BE UPON HER, AND SHE IS GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT AS SHE CONDUCTS HERSELF, SHE WILL DO IT IN THE WAY SHE HAS TO ABOUT HER CAREER, TO UPHOLD THE INTEGRITY OF THE JUDICIARY. I THINK FOR JUSTICE ROBERTS THERE IS NOTHING MORE IMPORTANT TO HIM, HE'S AN INSTITUTIONALIST. HE CARES VERY MUCH ABOUT THE INTEGRITY, THE IMPARTIALITY OF THE COURT. AND THE CONFIDENCE OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN THE COURT. I THINK SHE WILL BE HIS ALLY IN THAT REGARD, BECAUSE SHE ALSO CARES ABOUT THAT. AND THAT SHE WILL WORK VERY HARD TO BRIDGE WHAT HAS BEEN SEEN AS A POLITICAL DIVIDE RIGHT NOW. AS A FORMER JURIST, IT DISAPPOINTS ME THAT PEOPLE PERCEIVE THE COURT AND THAT THE COURT HAS GIVEN THEM A REASON TO BE VIEWED POLITICALLY. >> JOSH BROWN, THANK YOU
