WITH NOVEMBER EMITTERS NOW, ONE GROUP OF VOTERS CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE AT THE POLLS. THAT IS GENERATION Z. CENSUS DATA SHOWS THAT VOTER TURNOUT AMONG 18 TO 29 YEAR OLDS FOR THE MIDTERM ELECTIONS ROSE FROM 20% BACK IN 2014 TO 36% IN 2018. THIS IS THE FIRST CONGRESSIONAL ELECTION WHERE MEMBERS OF GEN Z ARE ON THE MIDTERM. BALLOT SOPHIE BARON IS THE FOUNDER AND CEO OF A CONVERSATIONALIST, NONPARTISAN EDUCATIONAL PLATFORM THAT AIMS TO HELP GEN ZERS HAVE DIFFICULT CONVERSATION ABOUT POLITICS. SHE IS HERE NOW WITH US. SO GOOD TO HAVE YOU HERE. I WANT TO TALK ABOUT HOW GEN Z CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. BECAUSE HISTORICALLY VOTERS AGE 18 TO 29 TO NOT GET OUT AND ABOUT. HOW ARE THEY GOING TO BREAK THAT STREAK OF THIS TIME AROUN? >> I'M GLAD YOU BROUGHT UP SOME IMPORTANT STATISTICS ALREADY. I BELIEVE GEN Z IS GOING TO MAKE A MASSIVE DIFFERENCE. AS YOU SAID THIS IS THE FIRST ELECTION WHERE GEN ZERS TRULY SEE THEMSELVES ON THE BALLOT. AND MANY OF THE ISSUES AT STAKE ARE THE ISSUES THAT WILL IMPACT GEN Z'S FUTURE. SO I KNOW THAT JOE NZE WILL SHOW UP TO MAKE THEIR VOICES HEARD. ESPECIALLY WITH GEN Z CANDIDATES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE. MOBILIZING VOTER TURNOUT. IT IS IMPORTANT TO ALSO NOTE THAT 17 MILLION YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE SENSE SCHEDULED TO VOTE SINCE THE 2020 ELECTION. I HAVE FAITH THAT THIS GENERATION WILL BE THE WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. >> AND HAVE THEIR VOICES HEARD. LET'S TALK ABOUT THE MAIN ISSUE. WHAT IS TOP OF MIND, WHEN THEY PASSIONATE BECAUSE THEY HEAD TO THE POLLS? >> JONES YEARS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO PRIORITIZE THE ISSUES OF MASS SHOOTINGS, ABORTIONS, INFLATION AND STUDENT DEBT. AS WELL AS HEALTH CARE AND MENTAL HEALTH. WHEN IT COMES TO VOTING. AND WHILE GEN Z IS NOT A MONOLITH, THEY DO PRIORITIZE THE ISSUES THAT WILL IMPACT THE FUTURE. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO KNOW THE GEN ZERS DO YOU CARE ABOUT THE ISSUE OF CLIMATE CRISIS AND ACTUALLY FIND A LOT OF UNITY ON BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE ABOUT A PARTICULAR ISSUE. >> THERE WAS A RECENT GALLUP POLL THAT SHOWED 52% OF GEN ZERS IDENTIFY AS INDEPENDENTS. WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS TO IDENTIFY ONE PARTICULAR PARTY? >> I WOULD SURMISE THIS BECAUSE GEN Z IS A GENERATION THAT IS REJECTING TRADITIONAL LABELS. WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO MAKE DECISIONS FOR OURSELVES. NBC'S INDIVIDUALS. AND MORE AND MORE WE SEE THIS GENERATION REJECTING TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS. AND FORGING NEW PATHS. THIS IS NO SURPRISE WITH THE TWO PARTY SYSTEM. SO I WOULD NOT BE SHOCKED IF IN THE UPCOMING MIDTERMS, YOUNG PEOPLE WERE VOTING OUTSIDE OF PARTY LINES. AND SEEING PEOPLE AS A HOLISTIC HUMAN BEING. >> BRINGING UP CONVERSATIONS ABOUT POLITICS SOMETIMES CAN BE PRETTY DAUNTING. WHAT WOULD YOU ARE ADVICE BE TO GEN ZERS WHO WANT TO BRING THIS UP WITH THEIR FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND MOBILIZE PEOPLE AROUND THE? >> YOU'VE GOT IT RIGHT. CONVERSATIONS AROUND POLITICS WILL ALWAYS BE A LITTLE BIT DIFFICULT AND AWKWARD. BUT I ALWAYS SAY IF THE CONVERSATION WAS A CONVERSATION THAT MAY FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE, IT IS CERTAINLY A CONVERSATION WITH HAVING. AND UNLIKE GENERATIONS PAST WHEN IT WAS INCREDIBLY TABOO TO BRING UP WHO YOU ARE PLANNING TO VOTE FOR, OR POLITICS AT THE DINNER TABLE OR WITH YOUR FRIENDS, GENERATION Z SEES OUR POLITICAL IDENTITIES AS INTERTWINED WITH WHO WE ARE AS HUMAN BEINGS. AND THEREFORE, YOUNG PEOPLE WILL MORE AND MORE BE WILLING TO START THIS DIALOGUE. AND WHEN YOU START THE DIALOGU, IT IS IMPORTANT TO ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT THE OTHER PERSON ON THE OTHER END OF THE CONVERSATION IS READY TO HAVE THAT CONVERSATION WITH, YOU BECAUSE YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS WHEN YOU ARE CAUGHT OFF GUARD AND NOT READY TO TALK ABOUT SOMETHING DIFFICULT. SO, ASK FOR PERMISSION. AND THEN WHEN YOU ARE HAVING THAT CONVERSATION, TRY NOT TO SEEK TO CHANGE SOMEONE'S MIND, BUT RATHER TO OPEN IT. BECAUSE HOW COULD YOU EVER EXPECT TO CHANGE SOMEONE'S MIND WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING IT
