Transcript for College linebacker-turned-snack entrepreneur
- Now with a new snack option for people who have allergies to nuts and other common ingredients, the product growing in popularity from an athlete entrepreneur on a mission. Take a look.
BLAKE SORENSEN: When I was two years old, I found out I had a nut allergy. Every time you go out to eat or any wrapper, you have to look at, just to ensure there's no nuts in it so it can be safe. I grew up playing basketball, baseball, and football, and then eventually really fell in love with football and ended up going to the University of Wisconsin, where I was a linebacker.
And being an athlete in college, you're kind of constantly eating, trying to keep weight on. I've always struggled to find snacks that didn't have nuts in them. So in grad school, I was in an entrepreneurship course where we had to create a company based on one of our personal needs.
Right away after I had the idea, I went to my kitchen and really began working on some of the snacks that we have out today. So Blake's Seed Based has been around since 2018. We have a line of snack bars, crispy treats, and sunflower seeds.
The overall mission for our product is to provide healthy, better-for-you snacks that everyone can eat, and have those available as many places as can be. We make better-for-you snacks that contain seeds that are free of the top nine food allergens.
The top nine food allergies are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, and sesame. All of our products we test after they're made to ensure that none of the ingredients are in there that could cause any harm to people.
So we have three lines. We have three flavors of the snack bar, a raspberry, blueberry lemon, and a s'mores. We use pumpkin seeds, sunflower seed, and flax seed. We have a line of crispy treats, and then our newest option is sunflower seeds.
By making the products free of the top nine food allergens and then making better-for-you, healthy products for people, it really just opens it up where almost everyone can eat our products. Being an athlete, it's been very rewarding to see our products end up in multiple NFL and NBA locker rooms. But not only that, it's also in a number of schools and retailers around the country.
I think the most rewarding part about the journey has really been how many people have helped me along the way. Starting a business, didn't know anything about the industry. And how welcome people have been, and how open people have been to get on the phone and help me along has been the most rewarding part, and I plan to pass that on in the future.
