Transcript for Tom Holland to portray Fred Astaire in upcoming biopic
- Now it's time for Pop News. Hey, Lara.
- Hey, George. Good morning to you all. We're going to begin with your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Actress-- actress-- actor Tom Holland is on a roll, crushing it as the latest actor to wear the Spidey suit, and that's not him. But he's also just nabbed another card. You're on camera.
ROBIN ROBERTS: Looking great, Janae.
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Hi, Janae.
ROBIN ROBERTS: Your hair looks great. Your hair looks great.
LARA SPENCER: There we go. There's Tom.
ROBIN ROBERTS: All right.
LARA SPENCER: Anyway, and there you have it. Tom just landed the role of playing the legendary Fred Astaire. Take a look at this.
- Fred Astaire. Yeah. I am. The script came in a week ago. I haven't read it yet. They haven't given it to me. I know that Amy Pascal has the script. She FaceTimed me earlier. I was in the bath, and we had a lovely FaceTime. But I will be playing Fred Astaire.
LARA SPENCER: Yup, he will, and he has some serious dancing shoes to fill obviously. But you can see from this video, there he is. That's a lip sync battle in 2017. Holland can handle it, man.
He also played the lead, as you might remember, in the musical Billy Elliot on the West End in London before coming to Hollywood. Fred Astaire, of course, starring in 30 Hollywood musicals. Guys, did you know he never did take home an Oscar?
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Oh.
ROBIN ROBERTS: Really?
LARA SPENCER: He was nominated for Towering Inferno. Never for his-- all of these wonderful movies he brought us with the great Ginger Rogers. No word yet on when the film hits theaters. We will be sure to ask Mr. Holland when he stops by this Friday to talk about the latest Spider-Man with his co-stars and his leading lady, Zendaya, this Friday on GMA. T
Also in movie news, Steven Spielberg has a new project that's near and dear to his heart, a semi-autobiographical movie called The Fabelmans. Seth Rogen will play a character inspired by Spielberg's favorite uncle. Michelle Williams and Paul Dano will play versions of his mom and dad. And newcomer Gabriel LaBelle is taking on the role of a young Steven-like character obsessed with movies growing up in Arizona.
Since the story is so personal, Spielberg is also co-writing the script. It's the first time he's done so in 20 years. The Fabelmans hits theaters November 2022. Looking forward to that.
And, finally, some great news from our friends at Dick Clark's New Year's Rocking Eve. The ball is back, and not only will they be ringing in the new year here in Times Square, to mark the 50th anniversary of the beloved special, the team will expand their horizons to Puerto Rico where actress Roselyn Sanchez will handle the broadcast in Spanish. There will also be a very special performance there from the king of reggaeton, Daddy Yankee.
And then on the West Coast, singer Ciara heads up the LA team. And actor, singer, style icon Billy Porter, there he is. He gets the party going down in New Orleans.
And, of course, it'll be Ryan Seacrest at the helm of it all right here from Times Square alongside co-host YouTube star Liza Koshy. The celebration starts live Friday, December 31st, 8:00 PM Eastern, 7:00 Central on ABC. Starting to feel a little normal.
- I hope they clean up this time, you know?
- Yeah. It is right outside our windows.
